I agree too! I love Johnny Marr, but I couldn't play exactly like him even if I wanted to. I'm just happy if you can recognize the song and it grooves. (BTW he said he can't sound like him anymore either, alot of it was studio magic hehe)

Right now I'm learning the chords to "It's only a paper moon." I like the Ella Fitzgerald version of it because she sings with the melody, not so blatantly NOT with the melody like Sinatra (when I try to play it to his version I get real thrown off and think to myself that his guitarists were something else to not listen for vocal cues of changes or the bouncing rhythm to change and just to be in their own world when playing).

But after that I think I'm going to try to learn some Norah Jones stuff. I've been listening to "Come Away With Me" and it's a GREAT CD. I think the female voice lends itself particularly well to that kind of music, jazzy, kind of bluesy stuff. Like in the movie the Whole Nine Yards. The songs played by that band in the background, just great sounding music.

I was THIS close in buying a bass guitar, but that Starfire XII stopped the funds for that. So I was learning this song for bass and decided just to play it anyhow with the bassiest guitar I have. Still sounds thin compared to a bass, eh?

"Leave Me Alone" by New Order!

Aired a version of S&Gs 'I am a rock' last night and totally ballsed it up

Had Ray Bradfield, a really excellent musician (guitar, dobro, banjo, mandola. mandolin, mouth organ - you name it) and great songwriter, play my D35 - it sounded soooooo good - just wish I could play it like he can

As another aside, I previously mentioned Phil Deverill who runs Melksham Folk Club and helps run Bradford on Avon makes his own 'Hogbottom' guitars, but also owns a nice guitar currently worth about $6K. I mistakenly said it was a Takamine (and someone said you could by the entire range for $6K). He tells me it's a Laribee

No worries. The b and v are right next to each other on the keyboard, after all. I just thought there might a a brand in the UK I didn't know about. Or that maybe your are Spanish. :)

Larrivee makes an excellent guitar, IMO. I have been tempted by them on numerous occassions. Last night, in fact, a new arrival at our open mike played a lovely, highly ornamented Larrivee. He was worthy of it, too. Fine player!

Sounds a lot like Phil's. Loadsa mother of pearl inlay (abalone?) and a lovely tone, and he plays it well. He bought it at a then bargain price of £750 about 15 years ago he told me. Can't remember what the exchange rate was then ($1.50 = £1?) but he reckons it would cost him £3K to replace (hence the current $2 = £1 gives a $6K valuation).

Currently working on "Halleluiah", by Leonard Cohen, I believe. Delightful song, both the tune and the lyrics. Been covered by everyone and their brother.

Hey, there's a good band name: "Everyone And His Brother"

Leonard Cohen it is.

Beautiful song.

Believe there's a clip of him singing it on youtube.

Here it is, if I read it right....but that's covered in another topic

Guess the link is too long.

Just type the w....w....w dot youtube dot you know what, then, /watch?v=rf36v0epfml&mode=related&search=

the 0 numeral between the v and e could be a capital O letter as well....

Maybe someone more technical can figure it out. I've forgotten how to shorten the link and the upgraded LTG may have changed some of than anyway. Sorry.

"When You Come Back Down" by Nickel Creek. I'll be doing this for a wedding at the end of the month. Not a wedding song you say? Listen to it from the standpoint of a father giving away his bride.

CURTO!
I agree 100%! I thought exactly the same thing when I heard this song! I also thought it would make a great graduation song to my daughter, or a great "send-off" song to anyone beginning a journey. Would love to hear your performance. If you get it recorded (and what wedding isn't recorded?) please post it for us!
