 Let me rephrase my question. Where were you born? Your heritage isn't Malay or Sing by any chance?

Here in Texas when you answered my first question, we would say "NEW YORK CITY"! :p
HAHA! Oh - born and raised in the good 'ol USA (Delaware in fact) but ye olde bloodties go back to Korea. Apparently I don't seem like one tho-Folks in Chinatown insist on chatting to me in Mandarin until I tell em I can't speak it - so they switch to Cantonese. Man, what's up?

There is a Light The Never Goes Out by the Smiths.

Now you see why I need a Starfire - a solidbody just isn't right to do a Marr impersonation!

Jahn - do you play live (Clubs, open mike, anywhere) - cos if not, why not - you are good

I'm so lame. I don't do any of that. I can't even really blame it on family obligations, because my wife keeps pushing me to try. I really should, at least once :?

You really really should :!: I do it - and people still clap despite my general inability to play guitar (but they are usually polite in the clubs here)

Jahn,

Nightclubs aren't my thing, but I really think you'd enjoy open mikes. Not only would you enjoy them, but a lot of folks would enjoy you.

I guess there's no real excuse - New York really does have a ton of open mics every night all over the place. Maybe I'll start casing a few joints, get a feel for em, see which ones have a nice relaxed atmosphere and aren't ready to club you in the knees if you hit a wolf note

I just made a few trips to my local book store to listen. I'm telling you as bad as I am, there were folks that had no business attempting to perform publicly. They are a lot of fun. You get to meet lots of people and make new friends. I think you'd like it.

Crap. Found the closest open mic to my place and lookit the description!

"This smoky, eclectic dive is a cross between the seedy bars that once dominated the Tribeca scene and some of the area's wackier art galleries. The crowd is very intense and very tattooed, and loud, angry young bands play on the stage. There are also occasional poetry readings. The decor is akin to gothic art, with an accent on reds and funky statues. For a place this lowbrow the drinks are expensive, but at least the bartenders make them strong."

 Try coffee houses and bookstores first Jahn, then work your way up. That place you mentioned asks you if your carrying a gun when you enter, if you say no, they give you one!

I think you're right. But I better start working on a drunk version of "Folsom Prison Blues" just in case! 8)

Didn't mean anything as high powered as Nightclubs, but what here are loosely called Folk Clubs where like minded musicians gather to sing all kinds a stuff. I'm off to one in Bradford in Avon tonight.

Let's see ... working up duo arrangments with a buddy, on Tom Wait's "219" and a slow blues by Mississippi Fred McDowell.

And bringing in a Leon Russell tune to my band tonight: "Prince of Peace" from his first solo album.

Watching this thread makes me realize that I really never try to perfect anything. Even when my buddy Harry and I record something, we just sort of take the first semi-decent track and build from there.

Our best moments tend to be very spontaneous. Our worst moments are totally ugly. Same thing when I play by myself. If I work too hard on something, the song starts to bore me and the magic fades fast.

:D Dred and I mentioned that phenomenon in another thread. I had mentioned that it seemed the only time I sound ok, is late at night, by myself, when I really have an urge to play. It seems like if I'm in front of folks it never comes out like I'd like.

Come to think of it, I usually have a glass of wine when that happens........maybe it's just the wine!

You know, i find that to be true too - spontaneous is the way to go, which is why the stuff i post up is full of mistakes, hehe. I learn enough to bull through it, play it, move on. I fear to actually be on my 100th take in a psuedo-studio setting, with the end result being a perfect take that ain't got no soul. i'm just not a good enough musician to have the kind of stamina to tough out a soulful tune time after time - and not talented enough to make an awesome version on the first take. so a fresh with warts approach is whatcha gonna get!

Hey, I watched a You Tube clip of Keith Urban recently taken on a home video. Now I'll grant you that most cheap video cameras don't do justice to real sound with so much distortion in a setting like that. But even taking that into account, he sounded horrible. And I'm a huge Keith Urban fan, but on this clip, he was way off key. I've never seen anything else he's done that didn't sound perfect to me.

Just goes to show that even the superstuds have bad days.
