I'd love to jam with you on "As Tears Go By'" joe, I've got the leads all worked out on mandolin for that song - on the Stones' version its the violin part :D
It's a great song for any number of possibilities.
As far as jamming together, we could probably split the travel distance and meet somewhere in the wilds of....North Dakota!?!
Wouldn't that be a hoot! :D

Mandolin lead sounds sweet,
Joe

That's funny - I just started working out the guitar chords for that on the 18th and thinking I'll need to download the words. The only Stones song I do, which is also a ballad, is Ruby Tuesday :D

As Tears Go By is a great song to play for a crowd of any size and it's even nice to play for yourself. It's just a great song, so get busy, Jer!

*Don't know how many folks know about it, so I'll just offer that I find all my chords/lyrics, etc. on chordie.com. Great site.

I like North Dakota, sort of like being on the ocean without the waves. Once you get across the Missouri in the southwest quadrant you are in spaghetti western country, quite scenic. I also like a state where a local (Grand Forks) sales tax passed to support the symphony, and also during the oil boom early 90s took some of the revenue to support research and higher education.

If you had real stones you would meet in Bismarck in January! Or you could split the difference with Jerry and meet in Greenland

I love North Dakota. I have great memories of time spent there, and the 'stones' that I have on/in hand did pretty well in Fargo in February. I'll get back to you on the Greenland thing.

I think we could arrange a 'Guild field test' of cold-induced checking/crazing of our nitro tops!
(That's in another recent thread, BTW.)

Cheers,
Joe

Ridge, I want to hear your key to the highway and compare it with mine.... :)

Hey Bluesypicky, sure thing! I will need to figure out a way to get a decent recording.

New song (although it is nowhere being perfected): Malted Milk

Once again, "perfecting" is relative...

Having issued that disclaimer, I'm working on three of my favorite instrumentals (I have laryngitis right now, so....) and I play them all in open G.

*Sheebeg & Shemore
*Minstrel Boy to the War Has Gone
*Spanish Fandango

Great tunes, check 'em out and enjoy. :D

I downloaded words and tabs - internet suggested doing it in C and I'd just worked it out in D - so for my voice range I'm now doing it Capo1 in C - and uplifting to D for the last verse - which is a repeat of the first - for a bit of variety. I'm also working on Eric Bogle's 'The band played Waltzing Matilda' :D

"The Band Played...." is a real gut wrencher to sing, especially if you're familiar with the history of Gallipoli, old-time war vets, etc.
But what a talent Eric Bogle is to take that history and weave it into such a poignant piece.

I like to play it for people who listen to lyrics. Usually, there's not a dry eye in the room! :(

A finger stretching workout on the F-212, in a cover of SRV's "pride and Joy" (posted in member's music for the curious)...

Checked it out and left a comment. Great sounds from that 12-string. I think I need another one!

Joe

Thanks for the cheering Joe! :D
I actually have another clip there of the D25.... Thought I would give the two mahogany queens the honors, but don't beat me up if you see a Martin or a Gibson popping up in the near future.....

I've added that to the repertoire as well as 'Tears go by' and 'Put another Log on the fire' - all have been performed in public a few times and gone down well. Just started a lesser known Dylan song - which has haunted me for years so I thought I'd better learn it and get it out of my system  'The lonesome death of Hattie Carroll'.

I'm toying with the old song Ventura Highway, by America. The lyrics are mindless 70's drivel for sure (Alligator Lizards in the air? Really?), but it's kind of fun to play and might be fun to record a cover.

With John Prine's visit to my neighborhood on the horizon, I find myself working my way through a 'JPrine Songbook' that I put together.

A few of his songs that I like to work on are: Hello in There, Speed of the Sound of Loneliness, Sour Grapes, Great Compromise, Blue Umbrella, Unwed Fathers, Long Monday ....just to name a half-dozen plus one. Good stuff!

That's some great music. A really rich source of great acoustic music, with strong lyrics and classic melodies.
