So GAD just needs an indoor pool in the basement!
Not far off. LOL. I did discover that a plumbing leak was good for the overall humidity levels in the basement but someone came along and put an end to that form of free humidity.

I seem to recall your vault having a very advanced pot of water doing the heavy lifting.

Funny, that is what I use in winter, but they have very little water in them, so you need to refill (and clean) them frequently. Also we have not a very dry climate here...I have additional 2 bowls with water near all the plants on the windows.

My wife has a cast iron dragon that sits on the wood burning insert and holds water. When the stove gets cooking it breathes steam out of its nostrils. Her only requirement for a wood burning insert in the new house was that her dragon would fit on it.

I ordered a Venta which should be here Friday.

Thanks for the responses, and I'll certainly post my findings!
If all goes well with my AprilAire ductless installation, I may have an extra humidifier or 2 to donate to the cause.

My humidifier is having two big fish tanks sharing a common area where my guitars are that during the months when I'm running the heat in the house, I normally have to add upwards of 5 gallons of water every 2 weeks between the two tanks. It does the trick. (y)
Wow, that's cool. 5g... I do about a gallon a day in my piss-ant Wal-Mart humidifier that keeps my "guitar room" humidified.

Tropical fish? Pictures?

We had fish when I was a kid. My job was to feed them every day. I would like to have an aquarium, but never got around to setting one up.

My grandparents always kept the teapot or something similar of water on the coal or kerosene burning stoves

Which one?
I got the LW25 Comfort Plus. I was going to get the larger one but I wanted black and no one had them in stock. This one is still supposedly oversized for the room and while I’m a fan of overkill I’m sure this one will be fine since the door is closed every night.

I have two of these Aircare units (below). One downstairs, one upstairs in a avg colonial style house. The downstairs works a lot harder to keep up, often with the fan at max during the dead of winter in MA. It eats 3-4 gal/day. The upstairs is typically 5-10 degrees better humidity wise and takes 1-2 gal/day. I run roughly Nov 1- May 1. Filters get changed every 2 months. I also have DIY water bead soap dish units in every guitar case.

I second that on the Venta, so easy to clean and maintain, just some water additive once every 10 days or so, and of course you need to give it good cleaning every so often. Mind you it takes tap water though so it's super convenient to refill, the tub of water is so easy to clean and wipe out. But you have no white dust, and really it is sufficient at speed 1 which is whisper quiet. Speeds 2 and 3 are louder for sure and I'd say you wouldn't want to sit next to it humming along on 3 for any length of time. Typical of any small appliance really.

My experience compared to cool mist humidifiers I've owned, with their scale and white dust, changing filters etc, imo the venta is hands down much sleeker and more user friendly. Current set up:

Right now my sensor says the room is at 40% so the number on the display isn’t right. I’m not too concerned about that because I didn’t buy it for the readout and having a hygrometer right on top of the humidifier doesn’t make too much sense to me to begin with, anyway.

I set it on low and closed the door:

Here’s that same chart zoomed out:

We’ll see how it behaves as time goes on.

Why am I not surprised that you would have the ability to data-log relative-humidity variations over long periods of time? :)
