My guess is that the seller saw the bid activity and began to lick his chops at over $2000 and thought he might entice a BIN of $4000, and figured he could change the listing with 5 or 6 minutes left, but when he did, he wiped out ALL existing bids and went right back to zero

What a tale - wish I'd been watching. I'll bet someone got in touch with the seller and arranged to buy the git for $4000 BIN, so asked the seller to set up a $4000 BIN which he would then hit as soon as it appeared. I've done the same myself when it looks as if a guitr might go past my price but I think I might be able to entice the seller to take a sure thing rather than bet on something better.

But this one? There's an old word in every army in the world - SNAFU.

Thanks for watching and telling the story.

You know, I honestly hadn't thought of that.....but I'll bet you're right. I've done it and I'm sure several of us have.....asked a seller to add a BIN after he and I had agreed on a price, then watched as he did so and hit the BIN button. But why would Kurt's snipe have gone through in the last seconds if a buyer and the seller had agreed on a BIN, and the buyer had hit the BIN button?

I'd really like to know the truth in this one. :?: :?: :?:

Actually, it sounds like the guy was expecting to get at least $4000 and panic set in with the lower bids and, inexperienced, he tried to make some changes he could not do that late in the auction to avoid having to sell it for the current 'low' bids...there are ways to end an auction but obviously he didn't know how.

More than likely the 'winning' bidder will never get that guitar at that price.

If it really was a fleabay error, most likely it will appear again as a relist.

Interesting,

Seems we have a prophet among us.

Not to slight Jane or anything, but it wasn't an ebay error and it's been relisted by somebody else.

We've now moved this conversation to here for part two of this saga!

Quite seriuosly this is reminding me of issues we discussed a few months back regarding the ability to prove ownership of a guitar with missing/altered serial number. I wonder if the Dallas Police would think it worthwhile to politely inquire if the lister could prove his ownership. At the previous listed prices and the statement that this is "8 of 22" (ie represented to be the same guitar) Grot might be able to make a case for felony theft or fraud somewhere along the line at least. And the Dallas police might be interested in finding out if other crimes might become evident when this one is investigated. Kinda like finding a big crook through a simple traffic stop, you know the story.
You can't possibly get the answer you want if you don't ask the question!
