I'm new to the guitar and have been taking lessons for about 3 months. My first guitar was a Fender C220 that I purchased new at a local guitar shop. I have since purchased a Guild D25. I like the Guild so much better than the Fender that I wish I had never purchased the Fender. I like having more than one guitar but would like to trade or sell the Fender and get one of the nicer Guilds. I like the flatpicking style and would appreciate some help in looking for a good guitar that would be appropriate for that style of playing. Any recommendations?
I was lucky with my D25 and found one with no issues. If anyone has personal knowledge of a known good guitar I’d appreciate a heads up.
Thanks,
John

You have a mahogany guitar now.
Next, try rosewood.
I have a D55 and love it.
I would like to play a D50 with the Adirondack top but I can't justify another guitar.

Fergi,

Welcome to the site, we'd love to see some pics of your guitar.

Rosewood may be the king of tonewoods, however Maple is verra nice.

G37's are moderately priced, pretty much the Maple equivalent to an Arch Back D25. I love my sunburst.

There are a few for sale here, with patience they come up somewhat less than these prices.

Welcome John, and another glowing testimonial to the lowly D-25, the old entry-level Guild :D

I do a lot of fingerpicking, and I really enjoy the DV-52 for that as well. Rosewood, very balanced tone, neck is not quite as thick as the D-25. That would be my recommendation if you can find one.

I very much agree. You've got a terrific Mahogany dread. A spruce/rosewood brother is just a classic.

This is obligatory DV-52 offering

This. Here is the concern per the posting - "There is a tiny crack running from the treble side of the fingerboard to the soundhole which has been glued from the underside. It can't be seen in the photographs and is barely noticible in person."

+2 on TMG's recommendation. I have a D55 also, and would go for a 50, 52 or 60 in a heartbeat. Depending on what your doing with the guitar, the 55 is pretty heavy comapred to my Martin - but just phenomenal sound.

HI welcome. Been getting reacquainted with my D40 lately, pretty much a flatback D25 with slightly fancier trim. Definite difference in tone and the fact that they offer a Bluegrass Jubilee model might tell you something...

Welcome. I'd say a D25 is about as good a flatpicking guitar as it gets; any other good choice is just more flavors.

Hi Fergi,

Welcome to the forum. I am new here too, along with my week old '97 D25NT (which I love). I agree with MandoSquirrel in that a D25 is a great flatpicker. If I were going to get another guitar, I would actually choose maple for its brightness, although rosewood is probably more of a well rounded tonewood. Since flatpicking is your thing, then I guess a dreadnaught is the way to go....

which begs me to ask the question What's the difference between a dreadnaught and a jumbo (besides looks)? There was a Westerly F50M in the shop where I just picked up my D25, and it had such a beautiful tone. It had deep bass yet still retained its brightness. Of course 4x the price of my D25. I know this is another guitar that Guild is famous for. The way I see it, a maple jumbo would be a great way to change the tone and look of your ever expanding collection. Keep in mind that it is still a learning process for me too. And if there is something about the dreadnaught shape that I am not aware of, Please, somebody correct me.

Thanks for the feedback. I've got my eye on a D50 but don't really know what to pay for it.

Here's a picture of my D25.

Welcome aboard Fergi! and Vey Niiiiice!!!

Ya, DV52s are the bomb too! G37 or a D30 are really good in tone for maple dreds!!! What D50 are you looking at? someone here can help to get a good estimate on the blue book value.

Here's a picture of the D50 mentioned earlier.

The owner says the bridge has lifted slightly.

Anyone have an opinion on a max bid? I don't want to be stupid about this guitar thing. I always seem to jump in with both feet before I know what's really going on. Wish I'd known about Guild before I bought the Fender.

Thanks,

John
