After watching this thing sit on CL for a month or more, finally decided to check it out, with a little nudge from Thunder.

Well, it was worth it. Great sounding, great playing guitar. Not to mention it was built during the year I was born. Happy birthday to me :)

Couple questions on this particular model. Mine seems to have a phase switch instead of the coil split. Also, with that switch engaged, middle position, if I role back on the tone knob, the out-of-phase sound seems to go back to a normal in-phase tone?? According to the last owner, this is how it has always been, and there appears to be no wiring mods done. Anyone got any info on these models RE: the switching? I know it's hard to come by since there were so few of these made.

Thanks, and glad to find a dedicated info source. Here's a pic of the S-275 that I lifted from an older thread.

Re: 1982 S-275

Welcome aboard Casey, and congrats on the new axe. Glad to see this beauty go to one of us, and glad to do my part to help you and my buddy from the other guitar forum swing a deal. Sounds like it was a win-win for everyone. Here's a knobs-on photo of your new axe.

Re: 1982 S-275

Everyone must have missed this one, Casey. Should have started your post with NGD (short for New Guitar Day) or "Newbie scores an S-275." Say hello to the newbie Casey, fellas. I responded to his Craigslist ad, saying he was looking for an S-100, and then he asked me about the S-275 he had been seeing on the 'list. Told him I knew the guy who was selling it, one thing let to another, and voila, he's got a new guitar and we've got a new member.

Ok, so I finally get this back today. Replaced the brass nut with a graphtech nut, fixed some binding that was coming loose, rewired the phase switch to function as a coil tap (phase wasn't really doing it for me) and had it setup with 11s.

Now it's mine :)

And how does it sound now?
+1. I have 11s (DRs) on the Blacknight and sounds very sweet to my ears!

Man, it's amazing. The coil tap sure makes this a lot of fun. Pretty weak output when you split those DiMarzios, but it just sounds so cool for different textures when looping. As for the sound, I guess it doesn't really sound any different, but the way it feels helps ME make it sound better :)

Gotta say, I love the 11s. My first time with them, and I'm thinking I like guitar that fights back a little (as J.Beck would say).

Definitely a keeper.. For now :)

What's funny about the story is that the guy Casey bought the S-275 from is the same guy (Dave) I bought a Peavey T-25 from. When I bought the T-25, I told Dave about the Peavey T-60 forum, which he was unaware of and subsequently joined. Two guitar transactions, two Forum members, albeit on different forums. Strange how life works sometimes.
