Hi folks...brand new here and hopefully about to purchase my first Guild. Seller says it's a Starfire III re-issue and has a Westerly sticker in the body. Serial starts w/ AG...odd thing though is that there is a master volume knob on the bottom of the guitar at the cutaway. What is this...a Starfire or what??? Any ideas...thanks so much!

Dr,

Welcome,

If I had to guess from the AG ser # I'd say it's a Starfire IV, from the mid 90's. ???

A little more info would help, pictures are always good :)

Someone will be along shortly & tell you definitively. While you're waiting you can check the Guild website "Dating your Guild " PDF & locate your Ser #.

Thanks Jeff..problem is that it's in pawn shop and I didn't write the serial number down. Called her and asked for it but she won't tell me the whole number but just the prefix. Anyway, I'll drive the fifty miles back over there tomorrow and get the whole number. It looks just like a III but the master volume knob down at the single cutaway is throwing me. I've read thru 16 pages here and looked at lots of them but cannot find any III's w/ a master volume knob down there. I'm thinking it's a late 90's model that someone added the pot to. Think that hurts the value of it? I can get it for $700 and it's a beautiful red head...whatcha think? Never owned one and have no idea of value. Thanks...David

WELCOME TO LTG!
As Jeff alluded, we like pics around here, and we usually promise not to hold them against you in a court of law....usually.
So, kick back and enjoy the best place on the interweb for all things Guild!

$700 is a no brainer, assuming it's functional.

IMHO.

Pretty much my opinion as well.

Here's a pic of my Starfire 3, of the same general vintage; humbuckers, two volume controls, two tone knobs, pu selector switch & a Bigsby.

Yeah ya got to remember to close the case right away or bam! The cat's in it!

Best not to leave a guitar case open at my place, Sam is the cat's name, another of his favorite spots is on top of my Ultrasound, looking out the window.

Thanks for the replies and especially the pics Jeff...I'll compare it to your pics and see if it has the same bridge, etc. It LOOKS like that one but again having a master volume knob on the florentine cutaway is odd. That's a beauty you have Jeff! If I get it..and prolly will..I'll figure out how to post pics, clean her up, and have a photo session! Someone put what looks like red fingernail polish along the white trim on the top side of the neck so that the positions are easily seen. Don't know if I want to try and remove it for fear of damaging the finish or just leave it for character (makes her look slutty though!). Any idea what that trim is made of and whether nail polish remover will hurt it???

Nail polish? I think the solvent for that is acetone, which I wouldn't try on binding unless I was desperate. Try lighter fluid (naptha) first. That would not damage anything, but I'm not sure if that will remove nail polish. :-(

I agree with Steve... I don't think you want to use nail polish remover (acetone?) on your nitrocellulose-finished guitar. Does anyone know for sure that it'll cause damage? I think so.

Naptha is generally considered safe. Try that.

Beyond that, I think we need to consult some experts. I do not know if you can get nail polish off a nitro finish; you may have to buff it out, if that's possible.

There's a product called Goof-off (google it) that I've used with success in a number of situations like this.
Dampen a soft cloth with the product and proceed....works every time and is kind to the original surface finish, etc.

Joe

*The product name is something most of us can relate to, I'm sure!

Well I FINALLY figured out how to post a pic! So here’s my unusual 2000 Westerly Starfire III I bought for $700 back in 2012. Haven’t seen one with a master volume control knob like this.

That is peculiar.
