Curious what everyone thinks of new guitars with relic finishes. Not a fan here. Seems like a fad to me. Kinda cheating or lying. Wear and tear should be earned, not faked. Fano makes a very nice instrument, but they all come with light, medium, or heavy relic.

Never bought a pair of stone washed jeans with tears and holes in it and I never will.

It's weird that the guys who love all that 'relic' stuff would never choose their girlfriends that way!

Sincerely,

I have one reliced guitar, my F-212. Of course, it's reliced from 50 years of playing, not factory abuse.

Honest wear shows an instrument that was loved so much they couldn't stop playing it.

Relic-Ing a new instrument shows an owner who cares more about how they look than how they sound.

Yup! If my girl is going to get any wear and tear, it'd better have come from me!

Guitars, on the other hand, I'm not so experienced with, so I don't mind someone wearing and tearing it for me first.

BTW, this relic fad has been around a LOOOONG time. Started with people trying to relic furniture to look like old French stuff, if I recall. With instruments, the new relics started coming on the scene about 10 years ago, I think? Fender's Road Worn series has been around a few years, and I think the Custom Shop relics have been around even longer, and all that started as a response to seeing the market's desire for relic'ed instruments.

Here's what i can't wrap my head around: A new 'relic' is more expensive than a brand new shiny model, but my '69 LP GT that I've relic'd over the past 40+ years of playing is worth less than a shiny new looking '69.

It's a strange thing. When I was doing furniture repair and refinishing, people used to bring me their old, beat up stuff and wanted me to make it look new. Then the people with new stuff would bring it to me and want me to make it look old. I was forever trying to get them to trade furniture! Of course, that would've put me out of a job. New guitars should look new. They should be smooth and shiny flawless. Then you play the hell out of them and maybe, eventually, they look like these "relic" finished guitars.

I just don't understand people very well, I guess.
