I own two dreadnaughts (spruce/rosewood and spruce/maple) and a southern jumbo (engleman/koa) hand built by Dana Bourgeois in his old factory in Maine, all spectacular instruments. My D66 sounds better than all of them.

It's kind of a fun discussion and argument to have, but futile. The originator was actually referring to top tier in terms of quality appointment or build, not sound, but it begs the question anyway. Is Guild a top tier 'sounding' guitar? The answer is, of course it is, but also, it all depends....on the guitar. Is anyone going to argue the Martin D-18 Joni Mitchell plays on her early records isn't top-tier (one of the best sounding acoustics on record)? Or the Gibson James Taylor plays on his early records isn't top tier? It sounds pretty darned good to me. Or the Guild F512 Ralph Towner plays in Oregon is a little declasse? Or The Martin D-45s the CSN boys played were not quite top tier as compared to, oh, that Collings, or, say, the Lowden that Richard Thompson records and tours with? My point is, it's impossible to say there is a BEST guitar. Would I love to be able to choose, say, between a Hoffman and an Olson and a Petros? Yeah. But, hey, Froggy Bottoms are stellar, too....There's no there there when it comes to top tier. It's all in the sound, and the ears.

If folks are referring to the AGF thread I'm thinking of, the criticism seemed to be based on not liking the look of the high-end Guilds and perhaps finding some of the cosmetic work not up to par. I think both of those issues have been pretty much laid to rest in that thread. A number of people have said that the execution of binding etc. on their Guilds is superb and several others (myself included) have pointed out that Guild instruments have their own classic look in the same way that Martins and Gibsons do and that, while it's different from those other companies' looks, it's just as much a classic and a great look in its own right.

I honestly don't think the OP in that thread was intended to bash Guilds but more to raise the issue of taste in how an instrument looks. Pretty strong agreement that a Guild looks like a Guild, and that that's a good thing.

I may have already mentioned this but on another AGF thread, Guild is frequently mentioned as one of the most under-rated of American guitars. There's actually a fair amount of Guild love over at AGF. And no brand escapes the occasional dig. If anything, Gibson, fairly or not, seems to get more lumps than most.

I did! And as much as I like it, after a thorough A/B comparison with my 72 hog top, I must say that I have a weakness for the "twang" of the whole hog flat back, and the difference (less than I expected) between both doesn't justify my keeping it, so I decided to push it back on the market for someone else to enjoy... :D

To be fair I think all your comments were valid. Obviously we're a wee bit protective and sensitive to perceived slams of our favorite brand, we have a mutual support system to fall back on here, and it's still an interesting topic just discussing what top tier really means.

Oh no sweat! I know I'll get my money back, no big risk taken here... Guilds are a safe investment anyway! 8)

So let's all keep this quiet.
We don't want everyone to know just how great Guilds are, do we?
