Over 20 years ago, a colleague had both hips replaced and was back downhill skiing the next season, and I'm sure there have been improvements since then. Good luck, Richard.

These days they'll have you back on your feet doing the Charleston the next day. Is the Charleston still a thing? I don't get out much...

Richard, speaking from experience (2020), take the pain meds they give you, don't worry about relying on them (they won't give you THAT many), and it will get you through the rough spots and you should never be more than a little sore and stiff...but if you think you are going to be a hero and refuse the meds, you'll be more than sore...and eventually need to use them! Wishing you all the best, depending upon the manner in which they did the replacement, you will be up and around and probably without a walker in 4-6 weeks...not ready to be laying bricks at that time, but walking tall and looking good! ;)

Absolutely this. When I got home from shoulder surgery I felt fine so figured I wouldn't take the drugs unless I needed them. I woke up screaming at 3am when the nerve block wore off. I'll never do that again!
