Good morning, everybody!

Since I bought my SF4 and few months back, I've been on a bit of an amp hunt. Right now I have a Rivera Clubster. I've been really happy with the amp with a tele and a strat. The 10" speaker reproduces the chimey Fender single-coil sounds well, and I can dial in just the right amount of crunch. At 25 watts it can get plenty loud.

But the Starfire just does not seem to like it as well. I've been assuming that the main problem may be the small speaker and small cab. I've been looking at some of the Fender 1-12 amps, and also thinking of building/buying a 1-12 extension cab for the Rivera.

Anybody here have any recommendations or suggestions? I mainly need good tone and flexibility. (Like, who doesn't, right?)

Carr Rambler

I know these are great amps, Mojo. But a little pricey for me.

Maybe I could afford a Rambler car, instead of a Carr Rambler...

My Peavey Delta Blues 115 and my 91 SF-4 get along real well together.

Thanks! I see you have a Fender DRRI, and you prefer the Peavey for the SF4? The DRRI was one I was considering.

Never can tell, in another 80 years, those Ramblers might have appreciated!

you should be able to find one in VC used condition for $1100-1500 if that is more in range. Ive seen several go in that price range on TGP recently. I could never afford one on MY budget unless I bought one used.

I demo'd a new Fender "Blues Deville" with my SF3, and it sounded very full, bright, and clean. This amp comes in 2 versions 40 watt and 60 watt. I did not buy it, only because a used amp makes more sense to me right now.

I'd try the cheaper route first... an ext cab w a 12". The clubster is a great amp and you might find that the 12" solves your problem. If not, you've at least got an ext cab you can use with whatever amp you end up with. That said, if you decide you really need a new amp, the DRRI is pretty sweet.

I'm a little surprised - I love 10" speakers, and have had great results recording archtops with Fender Princeton Reverbs, Pro Juniors, etc...
My stage amps all have multiple 10" speakers.

Are you sure you're not just getting used to the guitar and don't have it and/or the amp dialed in completely?

Walter it's certainly possible that I don't have it dialed in. I am mostly an acoustic guy, and I do struggle with amps and pickups.

Come over Dave! I'll let you try it on the Prosonic with two 10's....

Sounds like a plan. I'll bring my SF4 down... but isn't the Prosonic REALLY LOUD?

You couldn't be any closer from the truth Dave....
I had locked the thing up in the bathroom once as I was trying to isolate it for recording purposes and setting it up real loud.
When I went to hit the standby after I was done playing, I found my wife's jewlery box on the floor and the rings and earrings scattered all over!!!
I mustn't have lost anything though, to this day she never mentioned anything. 8)

The DRRI is very good as well. I mentioned the DB because it is a more versatile amp (as you said you are looking for) that can be used for just about any type of music and can get plenty dirty at all volumes with the pre and post gain, or you can keep it clean and rely on over saturating the tubes to get your grit. The DRRI is a great amp, but without outside intervention it needs to be cranked up to 6 or 7 to begin misbehaving for you. Both are very solid options in my opinion, but for pure versatility I would go with the DB 115.
