Funny thing, everybody raves about "Goin' Home" on Woodstock but I really only liked it for about 3 listens. My personal favorite is this obscure gem on "The First Great Rock Festivals of the '70's": "I Can't Keep From Cryin' Sometimes".
"Goin' Home"'s just an in your face Coney Island hot dog, but "Cryin's" an 8 course banquet of style and technique, a 19 minute tour de force, and even the drum and bass solos are whole class above the Woodstock solos.
I saw a couple of youtube vids of the tune, but I don't think they're that specific version of it, which was at the Isle of Wight festival.
Looks like you can hear it HERE though.
I liked some of the Ten Years After Stuff very much ("Love Like a Man", "I'd Love to Change the World",), but when I first heard that cut, I respected Mr. Lee.
Play on Alvin, you're in some fine company now.

I have to agree. Maybe it was the abundance of "substances" at Woodstock, but for me that performance is one that really should have been shorter. There's much better Alvin elsewhere.

You guys are old now. (me too). Goin' Home was the kind of fast pumpin', high speed, overwound, revved up number that a lot of young people like. It rocked. Much like some of the really fast punk numbers young people like. I hear some of them now and I think, it's ok, but too fast. Alvin Lee, though talented in other ways also as you have said, was sort of on the front edge of that.

Alvin Lee and TYA, was one of the first bands that I heard and got me into "Classic Rock". The performance at Woodstock just blew me away (I saw it in a video. I wish I had been there).

Sad news, indeed: RIP Alvin and Thanks for everything you gave to us.

All the best,
B.

One of my "desert island" records would be Undead by Ten Years After. Listen to Goin' home on that!...but thats the "B" side...

I've got a more recent CD that is Alvin Lee and Scottie Moore, just great...

Sad, sad day...

That was one hot band live. He was a fine entertainer, on top of being so obviously skilled at the; guitar. Sad news.

Alvin Lee passed away yesterday in Spain

Unexpectedly after complications of a routine surgery. (1944-2013)

Think I'll go play "I'd Love to Change the World"....

...was it rude?...
I guess in this context where we have no actual vocal clues, it might be misconstrued....but hey since we're joking about it that might make things a little more "friendly".

I'd already gotten very much into Lee's playing when I first saw "Woodstock". And so for me, "Coming Home" was interesting, but bordered on wanking at the time. However, his lovely touch, his perfect tone, and the note choices which went outside of most rock guitar playing at the time and already impacted me. I still love the great breaks on "I'd Love To Change The World", "Rock 'n' Roll Music To The World", and "Portable People".

He, along with Clapton, Freddie King, and B. B. King are why I wanted a semi-hollow for so long (it took me from when I was 14 and decided THAT was guitar for me until I was almost 50 to get my Starfire IV).

Alvin, you at least changed MY world, and I thank you for it.
