No argument from me there: as far as I'm concerned, they were hands down one of the top 5 bands to come out of SF during that era. They were definitely just about my favorite back then and I still enjoy listening to their debut album, which holds up extremely well, even today.
Unfortunately, from a legal/business/management stand point, they suffered one of the worst screw jobs imaginable. As with too many other musicians of that period, drugs and mental health issues contributed to their demise but, IMHO, their manager deserves a special place in Hell for the part he played. One has to wonder what else they might've accomplished if they had been "handled" better. I've talked to the son of one of the band members who told me that they became (understandably) very embittered about the experience.
