I had a pretty extensive LP collection during the late 1960s and early 1970s and also had access to several other folks' collections as well as a good, "underground", FM radio station broadcasting where I lived at the time (SF Bay Area). Still, there were groups active at that time that I never heard and have only "discovered" within the past decade or so. Here are a couple of examples that I really dig. Pretty sophisticated for the time, IMHO:

Do you have any favorite, old groups of that era of which you were unaware at the time, only discovering them later?
If so, please share.

Way too "synthy" towards the end for me, but mildly interesting due to the unusual Godwin/Crucianelli fretless bass being played by Terry Stevens (who plays a Fender Jazz in most other PICs I've seen):

Painted Ship

A Canadian group too psychedelic for 1966/67 prime time. An industry person said of one of their tunes that it might make the Top 10 on Mars but it was way too weird for Earth.

Apparently The Who dug them.

The Painted Ship opened concerts in Vancouver for The Yardbirds, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Northcott Trio and others. Bill Hay recalls The Painted Ship were playing at The Cave in Vancouver on July 17, 1967. Members of The Who and Herman’s Hermits showed up in the front row of the concert hall after their performance at The Agrodome. Before The Painted Ship finished their set members of both The Who and Herman’s Hermits joined The Painted Ship on stage for a live performance of the Rolling Stones‘ “Satisfaction”.

The Dream (with Terje Rypdal)

There was apparently a copy of their album in Hendrix's record collection. Whether he listened to it or not is unknown.

(Below: Rypdal kicks in with a pretty cool solo for the time at about 1:08)

_____________

Really? That actually sounds pretty tame relative to some of the other stuff that was around at the time.

Really?

Really!

But hey .... Radio People ... A&R People ....

I remember reading in Melody Maker, the UK music mag, about a group that was getting nowhere by submitting demo tapes to record labels, so they decided to test record labels by sending them bootleg tapes of artists already on their labels but changing the group names. They sent a bootleg of Led Zeplin to Zep's label. The label, not recognising Zeplin, replied that they could see no commercial potential in the group. Meanwhile, Zep was their biggest seller.

Lest we forget, the ladies were at it as well:

I was aware of Fanny back then, but include them here because, as far as musicianship goes, they were "the real deal". Part of the reason that June Millington developed into such a credible guitarist is that she received some tutoring and encouragement from none other that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter::
