How much tracking/info gathering is going on...what the 'hackability' factor/risk is...how the 'cookie' crumbles...there's already an ad tailored to the geographic area where I am accessing LTG.

Your IP address is enough for geo-tailoring and you can't keep that secret and access the internet. Depending upon how locked down your browser and system are, the Google ads being on LTG are not going to make things worse. But, for example, according to the Google terms of service if you are logged into a Google account (i.e. the right Google cookie is present) and you access an ad from LTG then Google has the option to correlate information it already knows about you and the fact that you clicked an ad at LTG. That is nothing new.

If you are already worried about this kind of thing then you just need to extend your safety tricks to LTG. Logging out of accounts when you are not using them and aggressively cleaning cookies is usually sufficient.

I don't see any adds, maybe because I am not in the US.
Update: Now I see them and they show only things from stores in Germany. At the moment telling me to buy a Samsung fridge! So they are obviously tailored depending on the IP address of the computer, means from where you log in. Since they are at the bottom of the page they are hardly noticeable.

I'm pleased to see that the ads at the bottom have now tailored themselves to us. Instead of random computer/financial/what have you ads, the ones I noticed today were for Blackstar amps, Collings guitars and Gretsch.

I may do a click through to start generating some income for Don on some of the more interesting, like Collings. Doesn't cost me anything and if it helps LTG, why not.

Don has been tailoring the Google stuff. We had some issues with some inappropriate ads, but we're hoping that's over with.

In fact, I just went through a short list of advertising categories that I turned off. Not particularly interested in dating 12000 Chinese women. :ambivalence:

I do like the affiliate idea & will try to look into that more. I know once upon a time, the owner of Elderly was a member here. I'm sure there are others.

I was wondering already, because yesterday it was for "Dating beautiful Asian woman" and today it was for "Gibson Acoustic J-35 guitar" ! :frog:

...we need an Amazon link, since I shop Amazon quite a bit.

You got it! It's now the top banner ad, but you only see it when you're not logged in. It's only visible to guests, (not logged in) or members with 0 post count.

I'm working on a few other affiliate programs and will try to make note of them as they become active. We'll probably use the blog & article areas for direct musical gear related advertising.

Are we an official Amazon Associate? Is there a kickback for linking through the banner? :biggrin-new:

Yes, & yes! A percentage of every purchase made through any of our links here gets kicked back, except the banner at the bottom of the page which is simply a pay per click spot. On that, a percentage of the cost per click comes back.

Still waiting on completion of a handful of other affiliate accounts, but American Musical Supply is now active with a side bar link on the blogs page.

FWIW, If you like movies and you're thinking about Netflix, check out Amazon Prime instant video. Every little bit helps. Just sayin. :biggrin-new:

Interestingly, I just logged in to my PC at school after a month or more and I ser the amazon ad on the first page. Not there at home, though.

At home I use firefox, at school Explorer - maybe that's an issue. Either way, it's not bothering me at all.

Usually it only shows up if you are not logged into LTG with your username and password. As soon as you logged in it should not be visible anymore.

I plan to add a new tab at the top for affiliates. I've had several new affiliations confirm in the last week but haven't added any links.

Remember, the larger ad at the bottom of the page is a pay per click spot. Every time someone clicks on the banner ad, a percentage goes into my Google Adsense account. The rest of the ads are affiliate ads, so there's only a return if you actually make a purchase when clicking through.
