Ads in my LTG!

Suddenly (I think... maybe never noticed) I'm getting advertising inserted at the bottom of my LTG page. Is this just me, somehow, or is everybody else getting it? I think it's OK if it's helping to defray LTG operating costs.

But, I have to say that between all the freakin' commercials on TV and everywhere else, and all over the internet, I'm about fed up. The worst is when I pay money to go in and see a movie and they throw commercials at me. I just want to run, screaming, for the exit.

Don is looking at ads as a possible revenue generator. It is not clear whether he will continue or not. He was going to post about it but clearly the ads happened first. So they are a new thing. People who are offended can find browser plugins to block them but if everyone blocks the ads then no one clicks on one and LTG gets no revenue.

I guess I rarely go that far down the page. I had to scroll down just now to see them. They don't really bother me that much.

So, it's pay per click? Also, <insert beating dead horse gif> we need an Amazon link, since I shop Amazon quite a bit.

The ads at the bottom of the page don't bother me. I don't usually scroll, down that far, and if it helps Don defray costs and keep LTG rolling, then it's a small, almost non-existent, price to pay. As long as its not popup windows, or something else obnoxious that I have to actively do something to get away from, then it's easy to just ignore.

I am making that assumption. The last time I looked into hosting ads there was a schedule that amounted to pennies per month for displaying on a site with something like LTG's traffic and nickles after one or two clicks. Basically if people don't click once in a while there is no reason to host ads.

Yes, there will be some advertising taking place. The one at the bottom of the page is an initial account activation thing. Once the integration is complete, I will probably throw a few ads in various spots that will only be visible to visitors, or people who are not logged in. For the most part, regular members who are logged in will not see the majority of them.

Also, at the request of some of the dealer members over the years, we'll try to work out some sort of sponsorship ad spots for our members who would like to promote their services to the membership.

That's a great idea Don. Almost all the other major guitar forums do it, and it makes sense to support dealers that support our favorite web site.

I didn't even notice the ads were there until this thread. I have seen other forums where they are right in your face.

The only ad I see is a Google ad. If y'all don't like ads, there are plenty of other ways to pay for the forum. Member dealer ads is a grand idea..

How much tracking/info gathering is going on...what the 'hackability' factor/risk is...how the 'cookie' crumbles...there's already an ad tailored to the geographic area where I am accessing LTG.

No personal tracking or hacking danger from these. The ads do nothing "to" you unless you click on them. Since it's all Google, & our site is referenced by search engines, I don't doubt that there may be some ads specific to some geographic areas that have been mentioned on the forum.

You should begin to notice more music, entertainment oriented ads since that's the category we fall under.

Like others, I never noticed them until this thread was posted. Since they are at the bottom of the screen they are really very unobtrusive. They are really not bothering me at all...

They popped up for me last night, and I was wondering if it were just an Aussie thing. At first that Ads were USA based, then they beacmae Aussie ads.
I have no problem with them, and agree, they are not intrusive. If they help support the forum, all the better.

Don-

Aside from ads, you might set up affiliate accounts with online retailers like Musician's Friend, Elderly, Amazon, Just Strings, etc. (just by way of examples). You could then create a sticky with links to those companies with which you're affiliated. Then members could use these links when going to those stores, so that you get credit (hopefully $$$) for referrals.
