Hey All,
Can anyone tell me if they have ever seen one of the old original Guild F-50Rs? I believe they came out in the late 60s and would have been made of Brazilian rosewood. I would love to get my hands on one if they even exist. Who would a person contact to get info on them?

Hello Jimbow,

Oh yes, they exist. I've seen several over the years. One of the members here, Chazmo, has one.
If you do a search you will probably find some of his postings about it and some photos as well.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Jim,

As Hans mentioned, I've posted a few threads about my '67 arched-back F-50R. I bought this guitar from member capquest right at the end of last year and he shipped it up to me from Florida. He is the original owner, and this guitar traveled all around the world wtih him on merchant ships. It's been to the luthier for a refret and nut/saddle job. The soundboard of Cap is non-original, and was replaced by Augie LoPrinzi back in '71-'72. This guitars got stories. I love it! :)

My first post about "Cap" was here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11695

Hans also posted an incredibly cool thread about the construction of this guitar which shows how the '67 arched BRW backs were made from laminations of thin slices of the same stock (inside wood and out!!). viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12487

Give a holler if you have any questions, Jim. Cap is currently strung up with Thomastik Spectrums and has a lovely, folk sound.

Here's the back of another F-50R. This one is from 1970 and it's not a laminated back; it's braced like most of the later F-50Rs.

My $.02, I have never played an original Hoboken F-50R (laminated or solid back), but I have played a few Westerly F-50Rs and Chazmo's is among the best sounding.

Particularly with those weirdo strings he uses...

Yeah, the '71 is a honey, frosty! I feel very fortunate to have these two wonderful examples of the breed. FYI, folks, frosty sold me the '71 about a year and a half ago in the midst of one of the most torrential rainfalls I've ever driven through. It was a worthwhile drive!!!! :)

Right now she's got D'Addario PBs on her, but the Thomastiks are waiting in the wings. Here are a few pictures of this early Westerly model. She's solid, flat construction, we think, like the '70 model Hans showed above. The transition from Brazilian to Indian seems to have been ongoing during that period. Bracing, as Hans mentioned, is the typical spruce cross/ladder pattern you see in the pictures below (Cap -- the '67 above -- is not braced):

Here are pictures of my 77, on page 2...I've wondered of the sides were Braz... ain't she sweet, she knocks me off my feet..... Steffan

Georgous guitar Steffan......funny how side and back seem to be made of a different rosewood, ever got to the bottom of that?

Not really, Blues, I thought the whole thing might have been Braz at one point, but having seen so many pictures here, I'm now thinking that the sides only might be Brazillian.....It got that figured look to it...Hans, are you reading this? .Wonderful guitar... :D Steffan

Jim,

As mentioned, I got mine here. Patience is a virtue, my friend. ;)

Another route you might take is to contact a vintage dealer, like Gruhn's.

Are you only interested in a Hoboken-era version, or would early Westerly do the trick for you?

Well, either one of yours would do nicely

I have been looking for 100% original Hoboken-era F-50R for over a decade, with my name on the "want list" at a few vintage dealers. They are few and far between, it seems!

Didn't know that, frosty! Good luck in the ongoing quest! :)

And Jim... Oh my, yes. The list is nearly endless, starting with the D-35V in your signature! ;) :D Here's one that I'd love to get someday... JD knew how to pick an axe. Find one of these and I'll never stop bugging you with questions!!!:

Yes he did and he is the reason I had my F-212 because I was a big fan and he played a Guild Twelve I know an F-212 wasn't what he played but, I wanted a twelve and the F-212 was what I could get and I was never dissapointed with it at all but, my taste in music went to Bluegrass and I got my Martin and the F-212 was just gathering dust and getting to little use  so I let it go so someone would love it and play it. Now my D-35V is a fine instument and I don't think I will part with it but, I would love to have a Brazilian F-50R to go with it and BTW that is Johns Custom F-512 with custom inlays and if you remember he also had a Std F-512 which he is playing in the cover photos of his Poems, Prayers and Promises album. As I said I was a Big Fan and not just because I am FAT!!!!
