How many pickers are "self taught" and how many took "professional lessons"?

Is this bad news for aspiring teachers? So far nobody took any lessons.

I taught myself initially, but later in life have taken lessons, which helped a lot. Playing music with others helps tremendously, if only to observe how others do things.

Wait, no both, or neither?

Once you take a lesson, you are no longer "self taught". It's kind of like saving "it" for marriage if you catch my drift. I don't want to use the "V" word in a public setting.

I disagree. You can be self taught for your basic technique and most of your playing, and then take a few lessons on just one specific area of technique.
For example, I am self taught for most of my playing since I started. But, to help learn jazz chord-melody playing, I took a few lessons, maybe half a dozen. I don't think that makes me professionally trained. I still consider myself self-taught overall.

I took the poll. When I looked at the results, my name did not appear in the list of those who had taken the poll. Now I can't see the names of the responders as I could just after I took the poll even after I logged-off and back on.
Is that the way it's supposed to work? Just curious.

I took 2 years of lessons, starting at 10-11 YO. The rest is self-taught.

Poser,

When did you take the poll?

I ask you, because I did it too, but before the last move of the site. I guess that info got lost, because the last backup, the one that Don used, was made previous to my answer... Maybe that's your case too.

All the best,
B.

I don't believe I've ever paid for a guitar lesson, but I do recall starting the basics in jr. high when the choir director at school was given the go ahead to offer a guitar class. Since then I've been privileged to work with & learn more from extremely talented musicians. :encouragement:

I put the poll up just before the last migration. I noticed that the first responders were not transferred so I put up a new comment to get it going again. Right now it's working very nicely. :joyous:

There's lot's of room for a grey area like seeking out professionals on line and learning stuff that way. I admit that I am guilty in that realm. Makes for a good discussion yes/no? :joyous:

I guess I responded to the poll before the final migration and then again today. (Vote early vote often?). lol
Thanks for your response to my comment.

So far the self taught pickers are leading the poll 3 to 1. Let's go STP. Let's go STP. :applouse:

Oh, I didn't realize that; I voted "self taught", but I took one guitar lesson, after I'd been playing 35 & 1/2 years, from a young guy who was more an electric player, which has never been my forty.

I consider myself a self taught golfer. I took one professional lesson from a teacher who said, "oh well, the ball's going to go where the ball's going to go". So, I couldn't figure out why I needed him.

Took 2 years of classical guitar as a kid then went on a 15 year hiatus...then picked up a steel string guitar and have been fumbling around on my own for almost 5 years. What do you consider this scenario to be?
