Quick update. I got an email from Nancy at Gryphon informing me that once the receive the guitar, they'll refund the shipping both ways. They deserve to be commended for going above and beyond. It certainly affects my opinion and goes along way of redeeming themselves in my eyes. Whether it will lead to a second chance, I don't know, but it certainly opens the door to the possibility.

YOU deserve thanks for posting the update. Like I said, they have a great reputation and no reason to try to unload a "turkey".

Well, as originator of this post I thought I should stop by Gryphon and check out the guitar. It's back on the consignment rack @ $1400 and I gotta say...

The checking was certainly not there when I first discovered the guitar. That said, I've seen far worse checking on many axes and this amount would not have detered me at all from buying the guitar if I had the $'s.

That said, to each his own on cosmetic issues. I personally prefer a guitar that looks like it's been really played and scratches/dings do not deter me if I dig the tone/sustain/playability. The best sounding acoustic I've ever played in my life was a Westerley D-50 that had been literally destroyed and put back together with string and glue. If I'd had a grand at the time, I would have bought it for sure. Most folks, however, would probably have used that one for firewood.

If you're looking for a still-stunning instrument that plays/sounds/sustains like a champ, at $1400 you can't miss on this one!

I'm very very confused by this thread. 6L6, I'm not giving you a hard time, just trying to understand. You bought a JF65 for $1550, it was sent to you and you felt it had more finish checking than represented? The you sent it back? Now the same store has the same JF65 listed for $1400, you think it's a tremendous buy for someone, is "stunning", but you don't have $1400? :?

Maybe I missed something?

They are on his check list, West.  I think he just received the guitar that checked on its journey, and that isn't what he was expecting, no one to blame...just circumstances...that led to a disappointment....kind of like a musical blind date.. except, 'she' picked up the bill...and good for 'her'...Steffan

West,

6L6 saw the guitar. Jazzdog bought it and it was shipped to Jazzdog. Jazzdog returned the guitar, and 6L6 went to see it again.

Boy, that is some classic finish checking. Definitely thermal exposure. Sigh.

Otherwise, it's a beauty.

After viewing the pics detailing the finish checking that occurred during shipping, I would have returned the guitar too.

Let's talk confusion!

Joe

True story. A salesman came to call on us out at work. Two of our engineers met with the salesman and the meeting was going to last until after lunch, so they decided to go out and eat. Well, all of the salesmen park outside the gate (main entrance) and this one was no exception.

The 3 of them walked out the gate and just kept talking and walking until they reached the last car in the parking lot. The doors were unlocked, so all three sat down. The salesman being from out of town sat in the passenger's seat and one of the engineers figured since the salesman was from out of town, the salesman wanted him to drive.....he sat down behind the wheel. The second engineer got in the back seat. Still talking, as the engineer behind the wheel asked for the salesman's keys, the owner of the car walked up.

And we trust our equipment to these guys!

I got one that had much worse checking than on the JF-65 shown in this thread... and I still love it! It's all about the sound... so I just close my eyes. :)

Still feel bad for Jazzdog who snagged it originally. If I'd spent that kind of money I'd want the cosmetic quality too, but I might have settled for some kind of remuneration from Gryphon given the circumstances if I liked it enough.

If I had seen that guitar with the stress cracks originally, it wouldn't have stopped me from buying it (if I'd had the money!). However, having seen it both "before and after", I would have done what Jazzdog did and sent it back. There are others out there!
