Well, as originator of this post I thought I should stop by Gryphon and check out the guitar. It's back on the consignment rack @ $1400 and I gotta say...
The checking was certainly not there when I first discovered the guitar. That said, I've seen far worse checking on many axes and this amount would not have detered me at all from buying the guitar if I had the $'s.
That said, to each his own on cosmetic issues. I personally prefer a guitar that looks like it's been really played and scratches/dings do not deter me if I dig the tone/sustain/playability. The best sounding acoustic I've ever played in my life was a Westerley D-50 that had been literally destroyed and put back together with string and glue. If I'd had a grand at the time, I would have bought it for sure. Most folks, however, would probably have used that one for firewood.
If you're looking for a still-stunning instrument that plays/sounds/sustains like a champ, at $1400 you can't miss on this one!
