Actually I think that looks pretty good, but where was it made?

Hello adorski,

It looks like a JF-30-12 from 2000/2001, which would make it a Westerly, RI guitar, but if tj gives me the serial number, I can tell you exactly.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks for asking Hans. The number is AJ322401, and while I don't have it handy at the moment, it seems that the block is stamped 2000.

That looks like a finish-only crack (checking) to me... it doesn't really follow the grain (crossing several lines), and the light appearance is pretty typical.

Agreed, otherwise it'd probably be all the way down to the sound hole too. I think their finishes were VERY thin in the late Westerly era. My '25 and '65 are very thinly finished.

Thanks Hans, that answers my real question about whether they ever married 'hog necks to maple bodies there.

Hi New guy here. I snagged the Jumbo from Gryphon. I'm sure I'll be smiling when it arrives. It came up at a time when I had some money to acquire a few guitars and a Guild Jumbo and archtop where on my short list. I picked up an X-150D a short time ago and wanted to add a couple of USA made flattops. It was going to a Taylor or Guild, I just couldn't pass up a clean Guild maple jumbo.

Merry Christmas !!!

Well, the guitar was not in the condition described. Either it never was or it was damaged by the cold during shipping. The finish is cracked all over the guitar. My opinion is that Gryphon Strings is incompetent and does not deserve any business. At their insistence, the guitar was shipped out on a Monday 3 day select and they assured me it would be delivered by DEC 31. UPS was't delivering that day and I specifically asked Gryphon if there was any concerns with the holidays. The guy supposedly checked while I was on the phone and said it would be delivered by Thursday. I'll be out the return shipping as a direct result of their error.

Jdog,
Prepare yourself for a collective groan from the gang as we all feel your pain. This is what's known in the GAS bidness as a major bummer. :(

*Did I understand early on that you had this guitar in hand at one point?

Definitely qualifies as a bummer.... Problem is you always risk the return shipping cost as you point out.
Keep your eyes open, plenty left out there, this one was just not meant to be.
Oh and welcome to LTG since I missed your first posts....

Did you let the guitar/case/package acclimate to the temperature in your house before opening it?

Sorry to hear about the bummer experience. :(
