It was two syllables when I was there decades ago "chi lie" rhyming with some pronunciations of "jai alai" :)
Thanks. Didn't mean to imply three sylables, just that my phonetic skills were lacking to get the proper long-I sound.

Newark DE isn't pronounced like Newark NJ, it's "New Ark".
Versailles KY isn't pronounced like Versailles France, it's "Ver Sails".

In both cases, the locals will correct you immediately!

And then there are all the native American names on Long Island.
Oh, here's one, Sandy... In the Bay Area, there's a town called Albany. It's pronounced "al-bunny" not "awl-bunny". I have no idea why. Clearly the Californians are wrong. ;)

There is an Albany, Georgia I've heard pronounced "awl-benny". But not everyone says it that way.

Dang. Busted again. Let's not talk about Davenport. Or Aromas.

And what the hell is a Milpita that they named the town Milpitas after a bunch of 'em ?

Robert Fulton was sailing his steamboat up the Hudson River. One of his crew members, Benny, was shoveling coal. Fulton saw something on the bank that he wanted to investigate and wanted the boat to stop. So he yelled out "That's all Benny" and thus the place was named.

Many place names here are Indigenous, mispronounced & misspelled by English- and French-speaking settlers:
Canada, Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec, Ontario, Winnipeg, etc, etc.

Out my way it’s pronounced Burrrrln’ not Ber-lynn. Its not Wor-kester or Wor-chester, but Wooster, Woostah, Wister, or Wistah will get you in the door.

While I might describe the pronunciation of this small town differently...perhaps BRRR-lin...you guys get the idea, just not the same as our @krysh 's capital :giggle:

Now, having lived in this area for nearly 70 years, I really don't know where this "Woo" stuff for Worcester comes from...that said, the AAA baseball team the city stole from Pawtucket, Rhode Island is refered to as the "Woo-Sox," so apparently I have been embarassingly out of touch...I have heard the city described as Worm-town, and I think there is even a local advertising-paper that uses that moniker...

In NYC, no-one will take you seriously if you pronounce Houston Street "hjuː.stən" instead of "how..stan", and the same applies to Greenwich (grehn..ich locally)

There is a craft brewer called Wormtown, and their products are quite good.
According to them, there was a DJ on a local station that started calling the city Wormtown on his show, and it got picked up.
