Iron Butterfly, Savoy Brown, Catfish at the Spectrum in Philly, Valentine's Day, 1970.

School trip, complete with yellow school buses. How a bunch of student teachers convinced the middle school administration it was good idea, I'll never know.

"Gee, those cigarettes sure look and smell funny ..."

.38 Special and Night Ranger. Probably 1983.

My parents did not let me go to concerts, so I missed pretty much all of the '70s and early '80s.
.38 Special rocked!

I remembering seeing Rickie Skaggs at a young age with my parents. My first show on my own was The Juliana Hatfield Three at the 328 Performance Hall in Nashville.

It was 1969. I was 12. My friend's mother took 3 of us boys to Shea stadium in Queens to see a weird concert that was some sort of benefit/protest thing having something to do with Vietnam war.

Tom Paxton, Staple Family Singers, James Gang, and others I don't remember. Not really sure why we went - none of those bands were anyone I'd ever heard of. Hardly anybody there. Stage was on the inner outfield just outside of 2nd base. No one was allowed on the field so closest seats were pretty far away. PA was not what PA's are today and every time a jet would land or takeoff at Laguardia the noise would completely drown out the music.

My second concert was way better - 1970, Capitol Theatre, Port Chester NY, Grateful Dead with NRPS opening.

Fall 1980 - Queen - YES - Jethro Tull in MN - before this - Muddy Waters in Tokyo - before this . . . . ? ? ?
Dylan 1978 in Sweden -

EDIT - JJ Cale in Helsinki April 25 1976

Nausau Colosseum. Of all the shows I've seen, that one had the worst sound by far.
That is actually where I saw the show. I was confused because Roger Waters played at the Meadowlands that same night.

A "ticket broker" I knew went to see the Roger Waters show, so he sold me his front row center tickets to Night Ranger/.38 Special.

That's why the show is so memorable. Plus, it was a great double bill.

We were laughing at Van Zandt because it did not sound like he was even plugged in, even though he was the most kinetic player on the stage.

We were in the 7th row behind you! Thousands of folding chairs, and then when the band started we all had to stand on the folding chairs to see. It was madness.

That show convinced me to never buy floor seats again. I used to run a Ticketmaster terminal back in the mid-'80s (or whenever they first came out) and I would always get first row on the side so I could sit. That also attributed to my hearing loss since I was always in the section by the stage right in front of the PA speakers.

I kind of broke that rule seeing Halestorm/The Pretty Reckless last week, but it was worth it. :)
