Something I’ve heard from a couple different sources, one of them a YouTuber who is probably partially responsible for Guild prices going up. Thanks for nothing bud…

What does that mean exactly that you have to fight a Guild a little to play it? Sounds like less than ideal setups to me but is there something to this?

I've never heard that before, like any guitar I've ever bought new I brought mine in for a setup as I like a low action, but rhe factory action was the same as anything else I've played, much lower than Martins factory action. If they're referring to get good tone or something out of them that makes no sense, nice is a tone monster that basically plays itself.

If I had to fight a Guild to play it, it would lose and be set up right... or sold. Less than ideal setup is the most likely explanation, but it could also be personal preference (skinny neck, fat neck, scale length, etc).

Sounds like the statement of another wanne be who knows very little but would like others not to think of him in that way.

It's one of the things I dislike about many forums, social media etc. Too many like to think of themselves as more than they really are. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of good info and interesting topics out there as well. But, you need to weed through a lot of BS sometimes to get to it.

I’ve owned six Guilds, from high-end to not so high, and all them were very close to just right when I received them. He must have gotten one that somebody left outside. 😃

Oh I don’t. I had dismissed it entirely until I heard it again somewhere. Perhaps the second person was parroting the guy on YouTube. The OM-120 I had was set up perfectly, as is the F-20 I had rebuilt. I try to play any Guild I come across in a shop and I wouldn’t say I had to fight any of them, though the last two that were in a GC were not impressive. MIC model, not sure which, but very thin sounding. I don’t really blame that on Guild though because GC never fails to disappoint with their inventory and how they set it up. (Or don’t, which may be the real issue)

I used to joke that I had a wrestle with my jumbo Guilds just because they're so large. I play seated, with the guitar on my right thigh (not the left!). Making music is a physical process! But really, this was more a joke than an actual issue. Love my jumbos!

What does it mean to "fight a Guild a little to play it?" Seriously. What are they trying to communicate? How much of that is based upon "the Guildiness" and not the player or the setup? I suppose you could say I have to fight my B-50 to play it but is that because it is a Guild or because it is a huge instrument and I have a huge pot belly? I say stuff like this all of the time when I am trying to convince people I know more that I really do. Sometimes the soundbite gets picked up and suddenly people think I am credible.

If there is "something to this" I would lean towards a wannabee expert and an echo chamber.

At least "Guild neck resets are hard" has some documented and verifiable experience behind it even if it is not as universally true as some folks would want people to believe.

I am not sure where that cat is coming from with that remark. I will say that I have owned a few Guilds that required a little digging into them to get the full sonic experience. My D4 was like that. However, that is part of their charm. You can plow away on the sturdier ones and only get louder. I owned a Martin ( D-16CE ) and two Eastmans that sounded superb but would not hold up to windmills. They would sound tentative and jangly when strummed with aggression. I hate when people pretend to be experts. I will be the first to say that every opinion I have is based on a very mid-level amount of guitar construction knowledge and should be taken that way. Sometimes my observations are commonly shared amongst those with differing levels of knowledge and sometimes its just an observation that is individual to me.

Rising waters lift all ships. Prices for Guilds is going up because prices for Martins and everything else are going up. As for playability, it's physical relationships, which are the same for all guitars.

Never heard that one before, but with the way things spread out of control on the internet these days, it’ll probably be joining about a bazillion other guitar generalizations in no time.

Sounds like a bunch of little weenies to me. I had 8 Guilds and played probably 13 in total. Only one I ran into I had to FIGHT was a late 60’s D35 that was long overdue for a neck reset. Like a previous poster mentioned if I had to FIGHT them to play them they’d be sold to the next interested party pretty quickly.
