As I've recently mentioned, I'm working diligently to both reduce my guitar level and also raise some cash for some much-needed work around my home. I've rationalized many reasons why it's the right thing to do.

It became crystal clear to me just last night that I'm on the right path. My playing partner and I played 4 songs at open mic last night, and I brought along my trusty DV 52. My partner's name is Jeff and he is really good. Our first song was "Dock of the Bay" and that went fairly well although I made a few mistakes on my guitar. The 2nd was "It Never Rains In Southern California" and it was horrible on both of our parts. The last two I only sang and did not play guitar. We did "What A Wonderful World" and "Needle and The Damage Done" and we knocked those out of the park, I think mostly because I wasn't screwing up the guitar parts.

So, I've concluded we're at our best when he handles the guitar work and I take care of the vocals. It's given me even more reason to let go of some guitars I thought I'd be taking to the grave with me.

Just to be clear, I'll still have way too many guitars but they will mostly be like the D 40, D 50, D 55, F 30 and F 55 plus my Richie Crowder Custom Builds.

It's refreshing really to have had an epiphany and to get reassurance (even if just from myself) that I now have a reasonable path to try to follow, one that will work for me.

Glad for you to reach a clearer path but must admit that my heart droops when I think of you giving tiny parts of, what I know you love, a farewell.

I have one flattop. It's my main instrument, and does everything a flattop should. And I do the fancy stuff in the groups I play in.

You know how Woody Guthrie said that more than two chords is showing off? Same goes for more than one guitar. There's no doubt you could sell a few and not miss them. Let us know how it goes!

When it comes to guitars, I think it’s better to move forward based on the emotional side of the equation rather than the practical. Proceed with caution, Grasshopper!

I think it's one of those classics that will be around forever and sometimes the truth isn't always a happy thing.
It's not an either-or. It is a downer and it will be around forever.

I'm happy not hearing it! But I have a friend who almost exclusively plays, listens to, and likes downer tunes. Plenty of other folks in open mic audiences are like him. So it's a safe place for downer tunes. Wouldn't play it at a dance, though!

Lol. I seem to enjoy playing end of life/dying /death songs but I mostly don't play them in public.

Knocking On Heaven's Door, Death Don't Have No Mercy, Long Black Veil, Black Peter, the aforementioned Needle and the Damage Done....

I like crying in my beer but if you ask an audience whether they want a sad song vs a happy one they choose happy 100% of the time... I'm not saying they're right, just sayin'.

BTW, I wish I could sing The Needle and the Damage Done. Neil is too high for me.

I guess we have "Gloomy Gus" type folks up here. They loved it. Personally, I prefer "dark" songs.

That song was about Neil's friend and Crazy Horse bandmate
who died of a heroin overdose.
A great song that needs to be sung more as hard drugs are still a major problem.
exactly, while I cannot relate to the song, thank God, it's a true story. And a story sadly true all over back then and now today. I love the plectrum picking Neil does in that, particularly the intros and lead ins before the vocal. It's really quite complex and really hard to replicate, plus, it's his natural style, so he makes it sound so effortless.

I go from Needle straight into Old Man. The old’n folk always love ‘em as do I.

Congrats on the continued determination to downsize Richard. Luckily you have an amazing assortment to choose from for your keepers.

I hear you on the playing & singing thing. I find it extremely difficult. I can sing half decent or play half decent. But when I try to put 1 + 1 together they sure don’t = 2. It’s more like 1/2.

yeah, I have a hard time singing and playing at same time. The timing is always off as I am more concerned with nailing the guitar part...
