The label in my '02 X-500 says Westerly. Does that mean it was built at that factory, or is it still possible that it was built in Corona?

Hello nmiller,

If your '02 X-500 says Westerly it's probably not a model from 2002. Who dated your guitar?

Give me the serial # and I should be able to tell you where and when it was made.

Sincerely,

Hans,

The serial is AK500540. I got the year by emailing Fender, who gave me a date of 1/23/2002. I'm not sure if this is the ship date or what, but the serial doesn't match any of the '95 or earlier guitars.

Hello Noah,

What Fender gave you was most likely the shipping date. Your guitar was made in Westerly but there is something wrong with the serial number. It happens every once in a while that something goes wrong with the application of the serial numbers.
I'm not sure what went wrong but let's see if we can figure this out.

Can you send me a close up photo of the back of the peghead, showing the serial number?
My e-mail address is in my profile.

Sincerely,

Hello Noah,

Looked at the photos and this is what I think that happened:

The serial number that is on the headstock should be AK500140 not AK500540.
The way the serial numbers are stamped into the back of the headstock are the reason that every once in a while a mistake would be made.
It's too long a story to explain how and why it happens but basically when it happens it usually stays undetected.
When the instrument finally comes through 'final assembly' it gets a label and the serial number is simply copied from the back of the headstock.
The fact that the number shouldn't exist doesn't make any difference since these numbers have no real meaning in the inventory system as long as it is a unique number that can be used to track the instrument when it's part of inventory, through the selling process and eventually for warranty purposes.

Anyway, your guitar was made in 2001 in Westerly.
As far as the Guild serial number charts that you can find on the internet are concerned, those are full of mistakes and omissions and you'd better forget about them.

If you have any further questions, just get back with me.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hi. I have heard about those before! Even seen the pictures on the vintagegitar forum. (It is spelled "gitar" in Norwegian.) You must post them here too!

And I would love to see them. That would be a nice little ride on my motorcycle, only the weather is not quite right for motorcycle rides, in Bergen or in Voss, this time of year. Now if I had a snow scooter...

Maybe when springs comes!

I do have some news, though: My beautiful Custom Shop Albert Collins Telecaster just sold ( :( ), so now I do have the funds to buy an X500 should one turn up somewhere. :D

I'll help you out, Erlend. Here's a picture of the x500:

I am Erlend's bass-player by the way. This seems to be a great forum.

Thanks Gullix. Now I understand what had happened to the shattered bass that my luthier had in for repairs. The owner I believe said it was a transport damage, while in fact it was caused by a climbing guitarist...

Here is a picture of both of them. (As posted on forum.vintagegitar.no a year ago). I hope Twangyman doesn't mind me posting it. They sure are pretty!

Edit: Hotlinking didn't seem to work. Let's see if we can put them somewhere else.
Edit2: And then we try again:

He won't. He actually asked me to help him post just that picture, but you are ahead of me. :D

And when it comes to the big dog-house-crash-to-be, I am expecting it any day. Erlend is... ehm well built. :)

So if someone out there is looking for a business opportunity: Maybe Kevlar 49 reinforcement of double basses would be a budding market? I remember seeing Lee Rocker doing similar stunts on his own bass, while playing it, back in the early Stray Cats days. I kept waiting for a minor disaster. But both the bass and the player survived.

Thanks for helping me with the pictures! Walter- I tried several bridges, but ended up with space control bridge. It is good for the tuning when I use the bigsby. And I dont have to worry about the strings jump out of position.
