As neat as that Freebird clip sounds, fact is it's mixed in at a level that blends it right w/ the guitars in the solo. If you were to hear that bagpipe isolated, you might change your mind! There was a police chief that lived across the street from my parents' house when I was a kid that practiced his bagpipe on weekend mornings and that thing cut through his insulated walls, our insulated walls, went in my ears and gave my brain a tetanus shot!! No thanks!!

Growing up my Irish neighbor across the street played and was in a marching group/band. He’d be outside on his yard playing quite often, even sometimes sober. I learned to like it. The dogs, not so much.

I don't think it's necessarily a case of them making their way south, bagpipes were historically common throughout Europe, North Africa and some parts of Asia, though their popularity declined in many regions. The expansion of the British empire, with Scottish Highland regiments very much to the fore, resulted in the Scottish Great Highland bagpipe becoming well known worldwide, but other types of pipe remained in use in various countries and have become more popular, in some cases where the local traditional music has made a resurgence.
