Would like to get some information on the X-150D that I just purchased.

Hi everyone,

I am new here, and this is my first forum post.

I just picked up a Corona Guild X-150D. I had one years ago. But, unfortunately it was stolen while I was on a set break while playing (of a things) a police picnic!

Anyway, I am happy to finally have another one on its way to me.

I was hoping that someone may be able to help me date it? It‘s serial number is: CBXXXXXX. EDIT: I edited out the serial number.

I was also wondering if Corona Guilds are still getting an unjustified bad wrap? I really liked the Corona made X-150D that I used to have. I preferred it to the Westerly made X-150D’s that I compared it to throughout the years. It was always more acoustically alive. And, the fit and finish were slightly better.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats! Corona electric Guilds are great instruments and only got a bad rap because they weren’t from Westerly. The pickups aren’t as good but I’d put any of my Corona electrics up against my later Westerly electrics any day. Fender knew how to make electric guitars.

I actually preferred the pickups on the X-150D that I used to have to those on the ES-175 that I also had. At the time I played fingerstyle chord melody. I am not sure if my opinion would have been different if I had been a pick player.

Welcome to LTG! The Corona electrics are very well made and the X-150D from that era is very nice. My brother-in-law uses a Corona-made X-150D to play jazz semi-professionally. Enjoy your new guitar!!!

Thanks! I really liked my old one. And, I played it professionally.

The Corona made guitars used to have a bit of a stigma surrounding them. I was just curious if this is still true? Or, has this dissipated? I’ve played a number of Corona made archtops and they were all quite nice. I always thought that the stigma was unwarranted.

The acoustics certainly had their detractors and while the electrics are great, nothing could compare to the halcyon days of Westerly. As a huge Westerly fan I’m here to tell you that any dismissal of Corona electric Guilds is unwarranted. They’re fabulous guitars and I own many.

I was actually taking a break and getting a bite to eat when an officer approached me and said that he thought that someone may have driven off with one of my guitars. I just smiled and laughed. Turns out he wasn’t joking. I couldn’t believe it!

It‘s serial number is: CB000027.
I would guess it is an early one, means from year 2002. Hans Moust would probably correct me if that is wrong.

The 2002 Fender Frontline catalog showed the model already, the catalog page is on our forum owners webpage:

Thanks Ralf.

The catalog says that it has a lacquer finish. I assume this means nitrocellulose? For some reason I thought I remembered my old one having some sort of polyurethane or polyester finish?

Westerly already sprayed poly on some guitars so I would not trust the catalog. Fender copied most from older Guild catalogs for their Fender Frontline catalog in 2002, so that info is not reliable. Could be either. Guild literatire is known to have errors.

So, I am probably right when thinking that my original guitar had a poly finish.

I should add that I have no issues with poly finished guitars. I own (and have owned) many.

I just look at nitro as being a bit of a plus (to me), because I have repaired the finishes on many nitro guitars throughout the years. So, if need be, I can easily repair the finish of a nitro guitar. I’ve yet to have to repair a poly finish! Well, except for simple drop fills.

EDIT: The poly finish on my newly acquired X-150D is thin and well done.

So, there is no easy way to date these guitars via serial numbers?

Define easy. If you ask Hans Moust he will either give you an answer or you can rest assured that pretty much no one in the world can give you the right answer. Would it be "easy" if Hans' next book was published and you could just read something there?

:)

Sorry, but I am a little confused. I can’t quite tell if you are being serious or not.

Is there a book available that has manufacturing dates that correspond with serial numbers?

“Easy“ would be being able to look up the serial number and get a production date.

And, yes. Being able to do this by looking in a book would be “easy”.

His joking is pointed toward Hans Moust, not you (sort of an inside joke, so no worries). Hans is the foremost Guild expert and has been working on a book for some time and, when published, will contain "dating by serial number" info (Frono was pointing out that we are all waiting patiently for this book which would make things "easy" if it was available). Just send Hans a PM and he should be able to help you date your guitar.
