I guess were bucking convention and starting a new trend because everyone is pretty enthusiastic about it.

Not trying to make a value judgement. I know volunteer musicians who have left music ministry or changed churches because they believed clapping was usually inappropriate and they were no longer comfortable in a place where the leadership believed otherwise. But most paid musicians don't express an opinion as long as their check doesn't bounce. Indeed many paid church musicians get their spiritual sustenance (if they need any) from someplace besides their gig.
