For close to 30 years, I had just 2, a Martin and a Guild nylon string. Raising 3 kids and getting them through college and grad schools, I didn't have time to play let alone look for others. Now that college is almost behind me and I'm retired, my collection had grown to 9 or 10. That just didn't make sense. You end up not playing the guitars you really like. So I thinned the herd down to 4. No more duplicates. I would like to get down to 3, but what do I spend a lot of time doing: looking at CL and ebay. I guess I need the 12 step program.

I should have added, I don't have a motorcycle, I don't have a boat, I don't golf and I don't go to bars. I am also kind of a dinosaur; but I have two hobbies: Buick Roadmaster wagons (I have 2) and guitars (I have 4). Total invested in my two hobbies, maybe $7500 total and it started 30 years ago. Really not very much money at all.

I only have one, mostly because I live in a place where good acoustics are hard to find. I actually get along just fine with just one. I'd still like to have a 12-string though, never really spent time with one and I'd love to try. And something with a smaller body than the F50R, maybe in mahogany and maybe with a pickup, for playing out or when I just feel like stroking something slimmer. And it would be cool to have another 6-string here so when people who play drop by there's one for them to use. And one to keep permanently in open G. And a beater to bring out to places where I don't want to risk the favorite. And...

It's probably a good thing that I live in a place where good acoustics are hard to find.

Well I tried collecting stamps but they didn't stick.

Then I got into coins but I was always looking for change.

Hot Wheels cars drove me nuts.

I struck out at baseball cards.

Matchbooks never really lit my fire.

But guitars, they're like sweet music to my ears!
I wanna be like Grot when I grow up! I think he's only 88 ahead of me :D (Guilds that is)

Why do I have several guitars....simple....because each is a chick magnet that attracts a different type of women:

Let's put it this way:

Les Paul.....GINGER
Rickenbacker.....MARYANN
Guild....Mrs. Howell
Jazz Bass....the Professor

I'm saving to buy one of those double neck Gibsons....YEAH BABY!!!

You attract Mrs. Howell with your Guild??? I am dissappointed...

How many do you have Steffan? I'm guessing 2, but I know you have been buying and selling lately.

As others have said, because I can. For years when I was scruffling to make money playing, I had three guitars, my F-212, because it really is part of me, my Mark V, because playing classical guitar entertained me, and my gigging guitar. The latter changed regularly depending on the gigs, I bet I went through at least 15 guitars between '72 and '80. I wish I could have kept them all, some of them would be worth a pretty penny today, but they were just tools of the trade.
They all sound different. Over the last few weeks, I've been rotating between the six strings, a different one each day for a while. I think the F-50 is the most versatile, the D-50 best for bluegrass and flatpicking, not sure where the F-40 fits. I also have a LoPrinzi LM-20 (Martin D-35 clone) that is okay for flatpicking and a Harmony Sovereign that is a nice blues guitar. The Masterbilt is very mellow, but I keep meaning to put on a metal nut and set it up for lap steel style playing. Even though my old F-212 is probably my most comfortable to play, it needs a little work so I've been using the 512 for all my 12-string stuff.
I also have two acoustic archtops, an Artist Award and a 1930s Metro B, different as night and day. The Metro has a sound a lot like the old Epiphone that David Rawlings plays, the AA is much more modern sounding, if that makes sense.

....and I only collect Westerly built Guild guitars.
How do you know if a guitar was built there? Certain years or what?
Virtually all of 'em will say "Westerly" on the label. A few very early ones made while the factory was being moved from Hoboken to Westerly have variant label, left over Hoboken labels IIRC. That was ca '67-'69, through Dec. '01, then production moved to the existing Fender shop in Corona CA. ALL Coronas bear Corona labels, and Tacomas bear Tacoma labels.
OOPs I see that's had a couple of answers already, but here's a couple more details.
As for that "12 step program", I think that's kind of like putting limits on yourself. Why stop at 12?
And on reviewing all the answers so far, I think the best one is "Because I CAN".
Yep. Second that. :D

Well I have 2, BUT I'm new to the game still. My gf25 is really THE guitar for me. The way it feels, fits , sounds, perfect. My dv6 is great for strumming hard and it does sound quite different being a rosewood. I have been playing it a lot lately but it isn't nearly as comfortable and I probably will let this one go as soon as I am able to. I would love to have another small jumbo with an 80's burst . Not good enough yet for a 12er. I agree with Joe, guitars are such unique instruments and there is so much to learn, it's ever evolving and a great journey. The only reason I don't have more is (1) my wife has me on a tight leash and (2) I really can't YET justify one more. But I'm good at justifying my behavior so it is only a matter of time :D
