I was sure 2 is enough. One rosewood, one mahogany, both dreads. At one point I owned 9 guitars at the same time and it got to me so I sold a bunch and determined that 2 of each- fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar was going to be the way of the future me. I have 4 guitars now- darn maple Gibson got in there with the rosewood and mahogany, and the 4 one is made of graphite and HPL( Martin speak for Formica)
Along the way I figured out that dreads aren't always the way to go so right now I have 1 dread, one grand orchestra, one Jumbo, and a OO size. along with the different wood variations.
My biggest problem right now is that I only have one mandolin having sent one to my daughter on the west coast, so I need another mando, which means a guitar may go to finance it. For the life of me I can't figure out which one.
They all sound great, all sound different, all get played and I don't really want to part with any these days when prices seem to be a bit depressed. I may be depressed as well, but at least I got 4 guitars to help me in my suffering...

For inspiration, and curiosity-experimentation. As I evolved, I acquired others, not letting go of the existing ones. I really need to get all Darwinian on those that are no longer capable of generating sufficient inspiration and appreciation.

Ummm....Curlington, are you an intellectual or something? That's some pretty fancy writing for these parts. None the less, I dig, man, I dig.

....and I only collect Westerly built Guild guitars.

How do you know if a guitar was built there? Certain years or what?

Westerly production stopped in 2001, I think mid-year, but you might verify that with Hans. As for knowing they're Westerlys, well, they've got all got Westerly soundhole tags, but also by the serial numbers, and by knowing which models were built there.

:) And Chazzy, my second son started college a few years ago, and we've got a ways to go. You'll notice I haven't bought any lately........in fact, I've just sold one (Prestige Classic Prototype).

Even if I had the money to buy any acoustic Guild guitar that I could find, I believe I would still be looking for a guitar that would be different in tone than either my F212 or my D35. To simply own another Dreadnaught, like my D-35 (like a flatback D-25) or another Jumbo Style 12 string, much like my F212 (like an F312, F412, F512), there would have to be a big difference in tone for me to need another acoustic. Maybe someday a Jumbo 6 or a Dread 12 would be nice, I suppose.

I play in multiple tunings and decided I wanted to keep a guitar in each tuning so that I don't have to mess with going back and forth as I practice.

For close to 30 years, I had just 2, a Martin and a Guild nylon string. Raising 3 kids and getting them through college and grad schools, I didn't have time to play let alone look for others. Now that college is almost behind me and I'm retired, my collection had grown to 9 or 10. That just didn't make sense. You end up not playing the guitars you really like. So I thinned the herd down to 4. No more duplicates. I would like to get down to 3, but what do I spend a lot of time doing: looking at CL and ebay. I guess I need the 12 step program.

Well I tried collecting stamps but they didn't stick.

Then I got into coins but I was always looking for change.

Hot Wheels cars drove me nuts.

I struck out at baseball cards.

Matchbooks never really lit my fire.

But guitars, they're like sweet music to my ears!

Grot speaks the truth. I LOVE having a bunch of guitars. It's just FUN!

If I had 100 like Grot I'd be looking for new digs, though

I just flat out love guitars. Always have.

If you think about the history you have in your hands including the original concept of the guitar itself, you have to be impressed.
And then follow the evolution of the guitar, and you'll get hooked.
I mean, it's basically a wooden box with strings that can be tightened to pitch and you can make music with it. Wow!

The most I've had at one time was 11. I'm down to 4 right now but I'm usually looking for the next one.
And, as someone already said, my wife often asks this very same question.

**Play a nice Guild, BTW, and you'll never be without one.

A lot of my reasons have already been stated by other forum members but I would like to add that the bottom line is that they enrichen my life greatly.

That worked for me (meaning for my wife) for the first three... the next four are just because I like the different sounds they all make! Playing guitar is my "meditation"... my Guilds bring me peace an joy. What other reasons do I need?

I like guitars, and so I have collected a few. Call it a hobby. Maybe an investment.

If you have several of the same brand, why? What is your return?
The only guitars of which I have more than one are Guilds. 'nuff said, right?

And... is guitar playing just a hobby to you or do you also derive some income from it?
It's a hobby. I derive a lot of pleasure from it. Rarely any sort of income.

Yeah pretty much what Dave said, except the F65ce was a steal and it already had a pickup when I was debating whether to install one in the D25, and IT IS GORGEOUS!, and the D40 is a Richie Havens model and IT was a steal, and it came with the 2nd pickguard, and Guild had just put the "GAD"'s on the price list and I thought "Boy there might not be any more American made Guilds soon, better get this puppy while I can"
For now I got enough of 'em. But I'd sure like to try a shortscale like an F30. And maybe a '12er. Maybe an acoustic bass. Oh yeah, I really gotta get something in rosewood. Then maybe a house so I have room for 'em....I know, I know, my priorities are all screwed up...
