I tend to agree with Rick Turner in his sidebar piece - the gradual aging process of the wood produces a stiffer, lighter, and more resonant top.

I chalk it up to well aged hearing.... just kidding...some guitars do mellow beautifully. my 79 D50 has a stellar sound that blows me away.....and if someone offered me 2 grand for it, I'd still say no.....I couldn't imagine a nicer tone.....Steffan

I live about 15 minutes from Gryphon Stringed Instruments. Sad to report that Richard Johnston is on a long road to recovery after a very bad bicycle accident.

If you can believe this, he was riding along when the weld of the frame at the front broke and put him face first on the ground and into a ditch. He was unconscious for a long time and only discovered when a passerby happened to see a foot sticking out of the ditch.

We all wish him well.

I've been told by someone who rides a lot, that carbon fiber bike frames can fall apart in just that manner. Particularly if they have been in a crash, & suffered frame damage that wasn't readily visible.

Good luck to that fellow.

I had not heard that about carbon fiber frames. Hope the new Boeing Dreamliner does better than that...

Richards bike was not carbon fiber.
