Well, most comedians were white males, largely because most males in the US are white. But I would point out that Redd Fox, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby have also received mention in this thread. I had 2 Bill Cosby albums that I listened to incessantly when I was young - "Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow - Right," and "Why Is There Air?"

And let's not forget Flip Wilson.

I remember watching Red Skelton when I was around 6 or 7. I've always thought he was funny. I agree with the comedians listed in this thread, unless they use excessive profanity. In my opinion cuss words don't make good material funny, just covers up for a lack of good material.

I don't think I saw John Lithgow mentioned. Third Rock From the Sun remains one of my favorite shows of all time. The entire cast was good but I thought Lithgow was near comic genius there. Just my opinion though.
