i played 2 DV4s and 2D40s at seperate stores earlier this week. The DV4 is the guitar for me, had the thin finish i liked, an sounded bigger. i will just keep saving unless a decent d25 pops up for cheap. thanks for all the input

I've heard raves about the new D-40. The Red Spruce tops
probably made them better-sounding guitars. My 1976 D-40 sounds
anemic compared to my F-65ce or my old D-25.

I think you got a dog, my friend. Time to sell her off! I've played several 70's D40's, and each has been nothing short of stellar... both tone & playability.

Maybe.

But see Kildeer's post. He seems to hear the same thing I hear.

"I have 5 Guilds with mahogany backs and sides and a D15 which is 'total' mahogany. There seems to be something bright about the mahogany sound with the spruce top, whereas the D15, with the newly-installed Bridge Doctor emits a sound that I can only describe as, perhaps, 'smoky' (and I'm not even a smoker). It's different, to say the least. Like a subtle growl or a deep purr? (I'm pretty sure I installed the Doctor correctly!) It's also an intriguing sound."

There is something special in the solid Hog sound. And I've never heard it in any Hog/Spruce combination, including my 76' D-40.
I think it's a tight mid-range punch with a diminished high & low end.

I like that sound.
