I should have mentioned I have between 6 & 8 hundred to spend.Doesn't seem near enough for some of the guitars mentioned. Maybe a Guild is outa my price range at the moment after all. :(

I think you can get a DV-52 for right around what you have. Keep watching eBay or ask the fellas here in the FS/FT area. Tell them what you have budget wise and they'll scour the Craigslists and whatever in their own area.

It's good exercise for them and it gives them a sense of belonging. Besides it's someone elses money.

DV-52's are cannons. Really deep, complex and strongly projected tones. I can't really compare them much to D55's because I haven't played many, but a 52 is closer to your range.

The lowest cost new USA made rosewood back/sides dread that Guild makes now is the DV6, which is still up near $1,000 new: http://www.elderly.com/fmic/items/DV6.htm

If you can live with mahogany, it's equivalent is $100 less: http://www.elderly.com/fmic/items/DV4.htm

If you really want a Guild dread with rosewood back/sides, the GAD series is within your budget... http://www.elderly.com/fmic/items/GAD50-NAT.htm

Naa !!! All good things come to those who wait. The odd D 55 sells for less than a thousand, DV 52's often less than a thousand, lately a thou has been a good price on a nice DV 62.

If you are really anxious Mahogany & Maple Gruild dreads often come up for $600 to $800.

Personally I think good Mahogany guitars sound better than run of the mill rosewoods. The new Tacoma D 40 BJ's come up pretty regular for $800 - 900.

Here's a Richie Havens in Detroit for $750

Another in Lexington for $800.

Richie makes em sound pretty big.

I gave or rather my mate gave $500 for this G 37, it's maple & doesn't have the big rumbly rosewood sound you described.

It has a big rumbly maple sound. 8)

Sounds like the D-52 is what I'm after. Maybe closer to Christmas someone will part with one for a really good price? At any rate,I'm very patient so I'll wait er out to see what comes along.

Yeah, I'd recommend hanging out and watching the DV-52's, 3 just went recently in the $800 range (and a couple for more, somebody just paid $1,400 for a sunburst DV-52)

But I gotta tell ya, my '76 D-25M is a real tone monster  and you can pick up one of these easily between 6-800 clams. I would recommend the bowed/laminated mahogany back with the spruce top, somewhere between a '75 and an '81, and the good news is, correct me if I'm wrong, they made more D-25's than any other acoustic, so there's lots of them out there, meaning some really cherry ones come up on ebay regularly. Actually, there is also the D-25C (cherry) only difference being a slightly redder finish than the D-25M's of those years.

I've played a lot of bluegrass on my D-25 and it hangs right in there with the banjos and mandolins :D

Hey CB if you're still watching here take a look at this. Put it in your watch list and follow along, ask the seller some questions, etc. It might have your name on it in a few days.

It's a very nice way to start collecting Guilds.

Countryboy, check out the DCE5. They're Westerly made, and right in your price range, usually selling for around $600 (and that includes a Fishman p/u).

I've got one, it's my gig acoustic, and it's got that big bottom end that you are looking for. I get frequent compliments on its sound.

They are built like tanks, too.

I believe that there are a couple on eBay right now.

My two cents worth of opinnion is:

1. The D55, new (Tacoma), newer(Corona) or older(Westerly), is the best guitar deal hands down, on the market today. You just can't go wrong owning one of these babies. This is one nice guitar.

2. The rosewood F50R may be slighty more bassy and slightly louder than the D55, but not by much. The strength of the D55 is its beautiful piano like tone with rich complex overtones. I have yet to hear a guitar that can match its midrange tones.

3. Some will disagree with me on this but I have never heard a loud Guild guitar. Volume wise, Martin has it all over Guild.

Good luck with your search.

Firebird, I put my D55 up against my Martin D35 the other night at a get-together. 'Pardner' outboomed Marty in a pretty big way... Some of my friend's comments: "Can I see that thing? Makin' a Guild believer out of me; gonna have to get me one of those!" The Marty sat on a guitar stand most of the rest of the evening!
