Really?
I heard that he got Alembic bass circa 1972.
Wasn't it this one?

Yes. Hollow.

I just got a contact sheet from a friend who took some beautiful shots of it when I had it here.

I would think that the "hollow-body-ness" of the Alembic would be very different than a Starfire, but that's just a guess...

Thanks mgod.
I didn't know his Alembic was hollowed.
However I think the sounds were very different such as 335 vs Tele Thinline.

But anyway we don't know how his SF could change its frequency response with that built-in pre-amps.
So all tunes might be SF,might be not.

As far as I hear the sound Jack playing, sometime he hit the strings so hard.
Then the flat wound strings beat the fret. That sound of SF is very unique.
But "Highway Song" is quite different.
I think two basses were used at least.

Sure, and a Les Paul Sig/JC bass different again.

The Alembic has very thin top plates, these days of Purple Heart. I spent a lot of time with it acoustically; it sounds very hollow and lively.

Jack's SF has preamps, but only for dropping the impedance of the pickups, not for filtering.
