Hi Daryl,

I posted this earlier, but for some reason it's not appearing live. So here it is again:

As an owner of one of those actual Guilds, I can tell you that Carlo Greco himself made those inlays. Maybe it's possible that the Custom Shop can imitate them, but they aren't available as a stand-alone stock item anywhere. I think, anyway.

:)

I think Barbara's right, Darryl. That inlay work was done in Hoboken and possibly in very early Westerly times. My guess is you're talking unobtainium...

However, if anyone knows, it's the folks around here. ;) Good luck in the hunt!

Maybe Barbara wants to sell you the neck from her F-512!?!? :D :D NOT!

You probably can't buy those inlays off the shelf, but you can't tell me there isn't an inlay artist in this country who couldn't make some for you.

Definitely, FNG. That'd be the way to go. As we like to say in the sports car web sites... aftermarket!

In fact, Darryl, why don't you get in touch with marcellis... He seems to have a lead on some magnificent inlay artisans in Cambodia (I think).

Thanks folks.

Barbara,

Last night before posting, I cruised through your posts about your 512 and info about Carlo Greco. I feel like making a trip to New York just to meet him. But what I want to know is how you can tune a guitar to b d e c l e e.

FNG & Chaz,

Another search I did last night was on inlay. I found a company that Coastie mentioned, so maybe I could have them do it. That's a great idea about Marcellis because the quality of that kind of craftsmanship in Asia is staggering. Or I maybe I could have it done locally using my own 512 instead of photos and tracings.

I'm sorry Barbara, but that is not correct. As much as I love Carlo I'm really sure that he didn't cut those inlays himself. He probably said (with his typical Italian accent): " Oh yes, I didde-thosa-inlays back in Hoboken" , ( there must be people who can do a better job, explaining what Carlo sounds like) but he probably meant to say that he put those inlays in the fingerboards of many instruments he worked on.
Those inlays were a regular inlay pattern that could be ordered from Germany, just like some of the other inlays and marquetry strips that Guild used over the years. I have the catalogs that show these inlay sets but I'm not sure that the company that produced those at that time is still making them.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Hey folks,

Excuse me for not posting this in the 'funny' section but Carlo's accent just reminded me of this little story:

A bus stops and two Italian men get on. They sit down and engage in an animated conversation.

The lady sitting behind them ignores them at first, but her attention is galvanized when she hears one of the men say the following: "Emma come first. Den I come. Den two asses come together. I come once-a-more. Two asses, they come together again. I come again and pee twice. Then I come one lasta time."
"You foul-mouthed sex obsessed swine," retorted the lady indignantly. "In this country we don't speak aloud in public places about our sex lives!"
"Hey, coola down lady," said the man. "Who talkin' abouta sexa? I'm a justa tellin' my frienda how to spella 'Mississippi'."

Maybe you need to read this twice!

Cheers!

Nice, Hans!!! :D :D

Hey, a question comes to mind... Were the inlays that came from this German compan a Guild original design, or were they pre-existing designs that Carlo just chose to use for the F-x12 fingerboards? Anyway, fascinating stuff!

Hello Chazmo,

It looks like these were existing designs. Guild ordered individual pieces and used these in their own combination. There is some sort of a pattern in which they were used but not every guitar used an identical sequence and/or combination.

Here are some of the available pieces:

Guild used # 107, 121, 129, 147, 173 and 192.

Holy cow, I'm laughing my head off. I'm Italian American, and I knew *exactly* what the guy was saying before I read the punchline. Hah!

As for Carlo's not having made the inlays, that makes perfect sense. He never said, "I made-a dese little t'ings ere, dese fiori." He just said, "I made-a dis chitarra."

I stand corrected.
