Where have all the tab sites gone,
Long time passing,
Where have all the tab sites gone,
Long time ago.
Where have all the tab sites gone,
Crushed by lawyers every one!
When will greed ever turn?
When will greed eeeeeever turn!

First of all my apologies to Pete Seeger…I just couldn’t help myself.
It’s been a while since I tried to find some tabs on the net, and to my surprise I found that many sites have been shut down for apparent, or implied copyright infringement. How long has this been going on? I was under the impression that the materials on the tab sites were the writer’s interpretation of the original artist’s music. Makes me wonder if the day is soon coming where if you play someone’s music ether publicly or privately you’ll be breaking a copyright law. Heck…I probably go myself in trouble for my parity of Where Have All the Flowers Gone…again, sorry Pete! :(

I think I saw tab sites dropping a couple of years ago. Long enough that I don't even bother to search because the sites that I found that still had tabs were in the dodgy part of the internet, if you know what I mean.

I not sure just whose rights are infringed by having their composition/performance tabbed, but I do know that if you are going to be strictly by the book, the composer is entitled to something for every public performance. So when you say

you should know that day is already here, at least for public performances. Luckily royalties are small enough that you don't find lawyers going after cover bands.

I think the copyright police have made life difficult for TAB sites.

This site was posted by another member back a while. Quite a bit available here & it seems relatively disease free.

When I started playing around 2000/2001 tab sites were all the rage for my friends and I. I remember that two or three years in they all started disappearing (starting with tabcrawler.com which was my go-to site back then). I'm glad they disappeared though because it pushed me to figure songs out for myself and eventually lead to me picking up jazz and theory.
maybe I'd still be looking up Metallica and Blink 182 tabs today if it wasn't for the copyright cops

***EDIT: After seeing bikerdoc's post... I guess tabcrawler made a comeback at somepoint?

Cover bands aren't responsible for those payments, at least for live performances, the club is.

PS And yes, they do go after the clubs. A friend lost a business due in part to the royalty lawyers and in part to raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 (his club was a block away from a college).

OK - I wasn't trying to be precise about who actually paid as much as I was trying to establish that the composer had some rights when it came to public performance. It certainly makes sense to go after the person who is pocketing the money for the performance which would be the promoter in most cases. That said, I have been told - possibly apocryphal - stories about papers being served on the performer.

zzrider - love ur sig quote. Great album....it's just a 'slow turnin...from the inside out...'. The whole thing is great...I should go listen to it.

btw, anyone checked out "fretplay.com"? Also, check out YouTube. There is a TON of stuff on YouTube. Not tabs, I know, but it's actual people playing stuff which is perhaps even better for some people like me that are "visual learners". Check it out. The sheer volume of shtuff out on YouTube is ridiculous and amazing (and a lot of it quite good I must say).

So mellow, how about redoing Hesitation Blues on the JS as a lesson? Talk through the changes, show us your fills and so on.

Frono,

I would love to do that, but there are two big problems...
I don't have a digital camera anymore and I'm a horrible teacher when it goes beyond the basics of bass (or anything music related for that matter)

If I can get my hands on a camera, maybe I could do a slowed down version with a better view of the fretboard... would that be helpful?

This obviously qualifies as major veer but that happens so often that veer has been selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel Veer (LTG). Graham is re-designing the uniform and rank insignia.

Can't help with the camera - I presume the one you used before is not available? Some digital cameras have a marginally acceptable video mode that is not limited by camera memory when connected to a computer.

What I would want, and I'll try not to make this too bass specific would include:

What are the changes? What chords are being used or being played to? Time signature and rhythm pattern. Maybe I know the sound of the rhythm pattern but don't know it is called bossa nova, for example. Where are you playing on the neck? Where are you using open strings? Close ups of the left hand on the frets and slow motion are both helpful. Narrative might be something like "For the first four bars the guitar is vamping between a Dmaj and Amaj. I start in fifth position and play the D on the A string followed by the a 7th fret A on D string with an octave jump to the open A and repeat. Like this." And so on.

Chordie.com usually has everything I need, and clutter free. You tube is a good suggestion, also Guitar Noise has some decent lessons.

Some Crosby Still & Nash tabs:

Here's a site with some REAL oldies:

Roger McGuinn's folk archive site (some REAL REAL oldies):

For all things Neil Young (site is hard to navigate through, but excellent resource):

my old digital camera broke and now all I have is my cellphone which takes horrible videos and if they're longer than 15seconds the file is too big to send to my email:(
I'll be done with classes in about a month. At that point I'll have more time on my hands and I'll swing by the homestead and grab my parents' camera.
