so I am all hot for this F-40 at a local guit shop here in tucson. but this shop doesn't yet carry the D-40 or D-50....unless it's the GAD series, which i dont want.

How does the D-40 compare tone wise, other than the dread shape....?

I have played both, in different stores, and the D-40 has more bass, more of that bluegrass sound. The F-40 is actually my favorite (I don't play bluegrass, but more Tommy Emmanuel style), and is more of a midrange sound.
The D-40 is light, feels big, like a dreadnought, the F-40 more like a large parlor guitar. Hence its shape.
Both have the same wood: red spruce top, mahogany back and sides, etc.

What I REALLY like about the F-40, is its shape is more like the smaller jumbos from the mid-50's, late 60's style. And the sound.
D-40: more bass, more highs. F-40: more mids, more of a focused sound.

And yes, I want one. Soon.

I have a mid-70's F-40, it sounds better than any D-35 or D-40 I've ever played save one, a '69/70 sunburst that I still have. That's a special one.

As always, YMMV.

Excuse my ignorance but I've always wondered what YMMV stands for.[/quote:1ebd3]
