Re: What inspired you to play Guilds?

Having been born shortly after Guild, I saw enough of them played in the 1960's & 70's that, to me, in acoustics, there was a triumvirate of Martin, Gibson, & Guild(THE big brand for 12 strings). I never thought of them as second best, or a poor man's anything, so when I had opportunity to buy Guild, it was simply a matter of playability, sound, & price.

Re: What inspired you to play Guilds?

I was shopping for an SG (preferably a '90's-made '61 reissue) and happened to catch this band live. Two reissue S-100's caught my eye. 'nuff said.

I've owned a total of eleven Guilds, but I've been down to the three pictured below for awhile now. I feel the GAS creeping up on me again...

Oh, I forgot to say how I found to Guild! It was the Martin Scorsese DVD "Shine a Light" in 2008.
I was never a Gibson fan, so I wondered what guitar Keith Richards played in the song with Buddy Guy (the one he gave to Buddy Guy and which is now displayed at the Buddy Guy Legends Bar in Chicago). After a bit of own research I identified that guitar as a black early 70's Starfire IV with HB-1s and added Guildsby. Since I don't have use for a bigsby anyway, the GAS for a Starfire IV started and was satisfied shortly after but with a 1967 model. At the same time I got my Starfire IV I joined LTG.

Also I liked the look and sound of the custom shop F-30-LM10 Keef played there, and I ended up with a GSR F-30 Rosewood instead...

So it took only a short time from there on and 4 Guilds are mine now...

Re: What inspired you to play Guilds?

I stopped playing the bass right before I got married and I always messed around with my brothers guitar, so I knew I had to keep the music going so I gave him some money to look for a good acoustic for me, I didnt know much about guitars so he helped me out.
He got back to me a Guild d25 factory black that I keep for many yrs .
Many yrs with no GAS for another guitar.
I finally sold it after I took a fall with it and marred the finish, I was bummed,
I have tried many acoustics in the last 2 yrs or so and I keep coming back to Guilds
In fact , I have a d50 bluegrass coming in , in a couple of days!
Guild are really great guitars, and I thank my bro for turning me on to them.

Fine, I'll admit how shallow I am... the looks of the D55. The G shield and shape of the headstock, the fret markers, the thin abalone rosette... it's the perfect amount of tasteful bling for me as once abalone etc. is added to the binding the manufacturer loses me (think Martin). THEN once I played one, and was equally pleased with the sound emanating from the sound hole and the vibration against my chest, I was sold.

How cool.... a Guild cittern. :D I want one!!!
That was a one off from the Nashville Custom Shop in 1999 for Keith, since he playes 5 strings very often he orderd a 10 string where the low E strings are missing. He uses open G-tuning, which on a 6-string guitar will have the low D on the lowest string. By removing the low 6th string he gets the root-note (G) as the lowest note in the chord. So it is basically like a 12 string but here only with 10 strings. We have discussed that guitar a couple of times here in the past.
Have a look here, read to the end of it for all info:

It was also featured here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ ... h-20120619
There are many Youtube videos where Keith plays it.
Just a few examples for you:

Re: What inspired you to play Guilds?

Christmas of 1967 I unwrapped a Sears Silvertone electric guitar and a Sears amp with tremolo. Later that day my best friend came over with his Christmas present. It was a semi-hollow body Guild electric and a Fender amp with reverb. I had instant guitar envy. That Guild played and sounded so much better than the Silvertone. And reverb trumps tremolo every time! The brand Guild was burned into my guitar consciousness.
I went through a number of guitars in the following years. Ovation, countless cheap Yamaha classicals, Martin, Gibson, Godin, Fender and finally a gorgeous Taylor 614ce.
Last year I began shopping for for a guitar that was on the opposite tonal end of my beloved Taylor 614ce. I wanted something warm, dark and deep. I played some Collins and almost dropped a large wad on a plain jane Collins D2H. I decided to check out Santa Cruz, so I went to a dealer who carried them. While I was there he handed me this D-55. I was immediately enamored with it's beauty. When I hit the first chord... that was it. I walked out with it and have been enjoying it ever since. It has the tastefully applied bling, stunning looks and that perfect D-55 tone. A truly classic guitar.
I never regretted my Guild!

Re: What inspired you to play Guilds?

Although I'd been playing since I was 12, I didn't have a halfway decent steel-string flat-top till around '88, an early '80's Fender F-210 that I helped my brother buy, but he never played it and gave it to me. Nice little Korean guitar with a "Set up in the USA" tag in the case candy. Always liked the headstock, had a little "wave" at the top with an MOP "Fender" logo.
Stolen out of my car around October '96.
Decided the replacement was gonna be a jen-u-wine 'Murrican made guitar 'til I started gettin' the sticker shock reading the Fender catalog (and the "other" two guys too)...but by golly was bound and determined to finally own a guitar that would be worth re-fretting, that's about all I knew about guitars at that point.
So one day my jamming buddy, proud owner of a bought-new first year JF30-12 says to me: "Ya oughta look at Guilds, Fender just bought 'em".
So I hied myself on down to the local Guitar Center (yes they stocked them in multiples at that time!  ) and found a few on the wall.
Most important quality to me was actually playability, and this one particular D25 had a neck that was like nothing I'd ever felt before.
I had an epiphany as I finally understood what they meant went they said "plays like butter", and I knew somehow that that arched back design was pretty cool.
Tried a coupla Taylors, a Larrivee, a Gibson, another D25 and a Guild with a cutaway and built-in pickup, (think it was a DCE-1) but none of 'em felt like that D25.....
Didn't hurt that the salesman quoted me like 35% off list on that D25 with a case, he even offered to "get me a new one from the back", but at least I knew better than that, and to make sure I got THAT guitar with THAT neck.
Put over 200 hours on that puppy in the first 11 months and it's got over 1300 now. After a second fret job I think it's actually better than new except for a few cosmetic dings...
That's "Hally" in my sig.

I seems to be a full scale "Freshman M-65", probably from the second half of the 60ties (after 1965). The pickup is a small single-coil P/U, nicknamed the "Mickey Mouse" pickup due to the small size. (See Hans' book pages 32 and 61)

Here's another such guitar: (disregard the bound fingerboard, after ca. 1965 they had an unbound fingerboard)
