Re: what music means to me

Yep, well said. Thanks for posting that one. we sure do enjoy his music and songwriting Down here. I saw him last year and he was in great form......always an emotional, and moving experience. He has a way of getting right to the heart of such large matters....and expressing it plainly and clearly. A songwriters inspiration and one heck of a decent man. Thanks again. SG :D

I like it. Never heard of them before but that is music to me. Simple, with nice picking and understandable vocals and meaningful lyrics. It doesn't get better.

Re: what music means to me...so, what DOES music mean to you??

Gee,

A political post, albeit relatively civil, just went on for 14 pages, had 1042 views and 195 responses...

A musical post, on a music forum, less than half a page, had 76 views, and 3 responses, ...

Had hoped that starting this, everyone here would post what music means to them...guess not.

Maybe it's a guy/gal thing...

This has been a public service announcement.

Re: what music means to me

Music has been, throughout my life, my own form of meditation/relaxation. I always loved to sing and decided 40 years ago (with a little encouragement from friends) to learn to play guitar to accompany myself.

Since then, music in general and singing and playing music have risen to be the ultimate form of therapy for me, personally. Nothing works as well as a sweet ballad late in the evening when you're trying to wind down the day. And I don't have to deal with a hangover the next day!

**Sorry that I missed this thread somehow; otherwise, I would have been all over it. So thanks for the reminder! :D

Jane,

Looking back to your original post, I think your query about "What does music mean to you?" got lost at the bottom of the page. I know I checked the Eric Bogle (I'm a big fan, too) links but somehow drifted away from the original question.

Thanks,
Joe

Well, for my part, thanks for going back, because I'm always ready to answer that question, to anyone who asks!

Cheers,
Joe

The discussion of music, or music related interests, is spread out over the vast majority of posts on LTG. Except the few veers. Not really one musical thread versus one non-musical thread. So I assert that relative importance can not be ascertained by comparing only two threads.

I mean... don't lose hope!

I really couldn't imagine a world without music. Listening or playing, music is what makes me right with the world. Why do so many great musicians toil in relative obscurity? Why do hacks like me plod along? It just seems right.

Yeah.

(Actually, I was tempted to chastise some for political postings a week or two ago, but I guess I didn't want to annoy. I think a little politics tends to go too far on a board like this.)

To me... playing my guitars and singing gives me pleasure, soothes, and relaxes me. What more need it be? D

Sorry Jane, but like others when I first read this post I thought your only thought was to share the video. But now that I understand what you’re after I will gladly explain what music means to me. I’ve been playing music for so long that it’s part of my personality, part of who I am, a part of my identity. Looking back I really don’t remember a time when I wasn’t making music. I started out as a drummer at the age of three. By the time I was five I had a Ludwig 5 piece set and was playing along with Buddy Rich LP’s on the High Fi, (that’s pre stereo for all you youngsters). I was eight when I picked up my first guitar and the love affair has never ended.

So what does music mean to me? Music had been my friend when I was alone and there was no one else to be found. It has celebrated with me in the good times, and helped comfort me in the bad. It allows me a means to express what I’m feeling, and how I’m feeling. Music aids me in giving some of my most sincere I LOVE YOU’s to my wife, to my children, my grandchildren, and friends. It’s an important part of my devotion and worship to my God. In the songs I write I can express my inner-self in a way that just couldn’t be reached by any other means. Through music I can give a small piece of myself that others can take with them. With music I can bring back old memories, be the beginning of a new memory, and brighten someone’s day as well as my own.

So what does music mean to me? It’s a gift. A blessed gift given to humanity in order to enrich our lives, and the lives of those around us. In a nutshell, that’s what music means to me. Now…go play something for someone you love.

Dane :)

Why do so many great musicians toil in relative obscurity?

IMO, because making music is a natural human activity. Fame and celebrity is not. Entertainers rise to greater public awareness, maybe, but those who are comfortable playing their music in obscurity might be content.

Sorry. Nanny software blocks You Tube at work so a post that starts out with a link to a video does not get much attention from me unless I see it at home rather than during lunch.

That said, I don't know what music means to me because it is an integral part of my personality. My parents were professional musicians who met in music school. There was always someone practicing at home while I was growing up. I have been singing in some kind of choir for over 45 years and playing some instrument, with various degrees of dedication and success, for nearly that long. I can't imagine a world without music and there are many cases when I realize I would rather be making it than listening to it. Interestingly enough, this all came home recently because my nephew is living with us and I realized I was stopping to listen when he practiced piano.

I also note that "one who sings, prays twice" and that music is deeply ingrained in my spiritual life as well. (Given the recent political thread, I figure I don't want to start a veer into religion  but you get the idea).

"Music paints pictures and often tells stories,
all of it magic, all of it true."

John Denver

*That just about says it right there. Wish JD were still around, getting older just like the rest of us. He and I shared a birth year, but he's gone now and I'm still here. Go figure. :?
