Curious about my '76 D25M. One reason I selected it over tthe Martin and the Gibson was the beauty and the richness of the mahogany back & sides. I know it's a laminate, but what kind of mahogany? Brailian, African? Also, what type of Spruce? I assume Sitka.

I bet Honduran and Sitka.

Yeah my understanding is at that time, there was no scarcity of Honduran 'hog ( Swietenia Macrophylla which could come from other South American countries, it's a type not a "country of origin" like Brazilian rosewood), and we've already discussed many times that it's extremely unlikely that Guild used and Adi prior to Tacoma.

For one thing it was too scarce and I've never seen a credible source confirm it was used prior to '05. I'd remember that, for sure.

I also seem to recall being surprised by a reference to "European"( Englemann?) being used even earlier than the Benedetto era, a '70's pricelist or catalog?, was only on the high-end archtops, like the AA?

And the occasional cedar like that small run of Westerly DV6's and then some Tacomas, but don't think ever did a cedar D25. Think I'd remember that, too!!

Oh yeah and 'hog, of course, and even maple (but not on a D25).

Overall I think a safe bet that a minimum of 95% of Westerly's flattop production was sitka spruce-topped and likely 100% of the spruce-topped D25's.

Also, @dreadnut , I believe only the back is laminated, not the sides, in case that's what you meant.

An interesting piece on CBS Sunday morning today- about the red spruce used to make an Italian piano, taken from forests where Antonio Stradivari got the spruce for his violins:

Engelman is a Western US and Canada species. European spruce is called Alpine, Carpathian, all kind of locations where it grows.
Yeah even saw a ref to Englemann being used in the 50th Anni D55's out of Corona, but that was outside the Westerly time frame. Just couldn't remember if Engelmann was the European stuff. They also used Carpathian in NH on a GSR (F40?), but again, outside the Westerly time frame.
