Was surfing around the John Prine website today - came across this ....

What John Prine currently plays (2005/2006):
•Acoustic Guitars: 1968 Martin D-28 for fingerpicking. Two Gibson J-200s for rhythm playing, one tuned down a whole step. 1993 Guild JF-100, with Indian rosewood back and sides and Sitka spruce top, for writing at home.
•Strings: Martin phosphor-bronze mediums.

Also, in earlier years it appears that John also played several Guilds on stage:

Guild 1979 D-35NT (used to belong to Garry Fish and was used as back-up to the '69 Martin D-28) It had one of the early Dean Markely Pro-Mag pickup's in it (modified by Alan Hamel) and Dean Markley strings on both.

Guild F-40 (probably). Note that Steve Goodman is playing what is probably a Martin '000', which now belongs to John. John says he doesn't play it.

Thought it was interesting... OK its not a big news day.

Saw him Friday night in Sacramento. His trusty D-28 was there along with the J-200's. He also does a couple of songs with an electric. Looked like a Fender. Best new story, for me, was one about in the early days coming up with a song on his way to a club in Chicago (back when he still had his day job as a mailman) and figuring the melody would be so tricky, he doubted he could come up with the music for it. When he sat down and wrote it all out, "Damn, the same 3 chords I use in every song!" That song was "Souvineers".
He was a little slow to start out, but about a third into the set he started to hit his rhythm. He didn't talk as much as he has in the shows I've seen the past few years. Josh Ritter opened. To me an interesting new guy, although it appears he has been around for a few years.
