D4 way too big for kids.

3/4" size Yamaha is a very good idea.

Hand size isn't everything, but finger strength is, it builds up over time. Seen lots of people with bigger hands who can't bend strings like I can.

Starting out, use a Mel Bay book, don't go too fast.

When a kid starts to get good, I show em every trick I know, see what sticks.

I was never able to use the Mel Bay book, and I never learned to read music.

That 3/4 Yamaha looks like a great starter guitar.

Just teach 'em 3 chords and let 'em go from there!

The Yamaha seems to be getting lots of love! I have not ruled that out for certain, it's still very much a contender. And, yes, they'll be taking them home so a gig Bag is a necessity.

Bag/case, capo, spare set of strings and snark, are all standard equipment IMHO.

If the kids have half the excitement that this thread does, we'll have them playing in no time.

One of the boys (named Reagan) is someone really dear to my heart. His mom brought the kids in the day we opened the church, and they have been with us ever since (going on 8 years now!) so I've watched him grow up. Tragically, his mother died of cancer about 5 years ago. It's just rips my heart out to see what the kids have had to go through (he has two younger sisters.) Just the sweetest kids you can imagine. Anyway... I'm praying he will start playing and just fall in love with the guitar. I know my D40 got me through quite a lot over the years...

But you can't force these things. (I'll keep you all posted!)

Thanks all!

Good advice, Fronobulax in getting them in front of people. The people will be very supportive. And there just isn't an easier song than "They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love." Am and Em. That's it!
Maybe I learned the Rocky Mountain version but it seems there is a "C" that sneaks in once in a while..... but that is easy too. That is a tune that has been played countless times on my Yamaha FG230 (1970)...... and it is still good (the tune and the Yammie!)

I should have said: "a simplified version" is am/em.

And Joshua fought the battle of Jericho can be played with Dm and A7.. also not too tough!
