And for our anniversary this year, she helped establish a room in the basement as my guitar room, so I would say she is supportive. Or trying to isolate me from the rest of the house when I am playing.
Would you classify that as a "mixed message?"
Either way, it sounds like a win-win situation to me!

It's all good,

I just need to remind Mrs. Dread once in awhile that I've had my old Guild longer than we've been married.

Then I get to go sleep on the couch with the Guild

Actually, she's been very supportive of my addiction, affliction, or whatever you call it. Especially since I've decided to make music my vocation from here on out. I wouldn't be able to make that leap without her full support, so I don't think I could ask for anything more. But that was true about her already :D

Moving right along......

Joe the Other
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of a shared sense of humor... the real key to long term relationships.

Supportive? Mine is constantly telling me I don't play often enough. I go for moths without picking it up. But then again, if I bought an electric and a 400 watt Marshall amp, she might say once every couple of months was unbearable  .

Bill Watson, my first guitar teacher, once told me, "If you can't be good, at least be loud."

That is actually realistic advice in a group setting where there is a conductor/leader trying to coordinate and improve things. If they cannot hear the mistake then they can do nothing to help you fix it and prevent a re-occurrence.

I mentioned a year ago: I put on James Taylors "Best of" CD. After a while Mrs. said "You know, honey, somehow he's playing a little bit like you …" :D :D :D

N i c e. How many of us would love to have had a few zingers like that in our relationships? Straight to the heart....she must be pretty special, Marcus. Steffan

my wife is a classically trained vocalist. we do a lot of music together:
i play, she sings, and sometimes i sing or do harmonies.
so, fortunately lack of understanding is not an issue i have to deal with.

over the past decade+, i've been extremely busy with my IT career.
my guitars languished a bit under the bed, in between brief bursts of playing.

lately, i've been buying new guitars and really picking up the playing.
we're working up a set; my callouses are actually on their way back. :D

all she says is, "i'm glad to see you playing guitar again."
she finds it comforting and familiar (we were both in bands when we met),
and she thinks it helps balance out all the right brain activity i do all day. ;)

oh, and finally... when me met, she had just decided to take guitar lessons.
she came to the relationship with... a '70s Guild S60 electric :!:

talk about meant to be...

I guess as long as all our bills are paid and we are pretty much debt free, she's okay with it. In fact, just recently she saw me looking at guitars on eBay and asked if it was time for another guitar!

In about 98 when I started playing again after a 35 year hiatus to do other "stuff" such as race cars, coach basketball, work the fire district, hunt elk, etc, she thought maybe it was just something else for me to do.

Well, here we are.

She spends 30-40 hours a week at the computer entering invoices, making applications to companies, sorting out the bank account, trying to keep tabs on the inventory, running the showroom in Stanford etc, etc, etc.

Her vice is collecting Beatles music. Which by the way doesn't take near the money or work as this business.

She also loves Jon Jorgenson guitar and we try to stop and listen to our lead studio instructor Larry Park (of Boy Howdy fame) with our store manager on bass, and ad exec on mandolin and harmonica once a week.
Fabulous group if any of you have ever heard Park play.

There is no way I can hide my guitar and amp purchases, so I've quit trying.

To her credit she only sighed heavily when I ordered 112 (thats one hundred and twelve) Fenders just a little while back.

The old sheila has been wonderfully supportive, even encouraging.

I'm not so sure though that she's entirely keen on the proliferation of amps. and cabinets around here ........ I love building cabinets !!

Built two more since this shot was taken ..........
