When I was a kid, The Cramps blew my mind because they showed me I wasn't necessarily a weird 14 yo for liking Rockabilly, and I loved the dark, noisy contemporary spin they put on it.
When I was about 19 The Paladins blew my mind because they went seamlessly from intense Chicago blues into stuttering Rockabilly and then went into Hendrix-inspired blues rock and they totally made it all work.
Dave Gonzalez was probably the first seasoned guitar stylist/virtuoso I ever really saw live, and he made a lot of different rootsy styles and influences blend together, all within some kind of Rockabilly aesthetic that by that time had kind of become my world.
Later on, around the time their "kiko" album came out, Los Lobos. I've seen some mediocre shows, some good shows, and a couple of brilliant ones by them since, but that first one was total magic. Enough talent in one band for five good bands.
