Bluegrass acts never plug in (Del McCoury Band, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Alison Krause and Union Station, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder...) they just crowd around a single mic. They amplify their instrumental breaks and vocal parts by virtue of their proximity to the mic.

If I could afford their mic$ and $ound $y$tem, I'll bet it would sound real nice.

Does anyone have experience in using the proximity mics and what kind of shekels a guy might have to part with to get a good one?

Dred,

Funny you should ask! I just finished reading my just-arrived latest issue of Acoustic Guitar mag (April), and they deal with that subject in great detail. All the questions you would ask, they answer them. Check it out. This method is not for everybody, but works for the performers you mentioned above.

Ill tell ya, i bought a Genz Benz Shen 100 a month ago and it is as close as ive heard to natural in an amp. I played the Fishman, Roland AC, Trace and California and i prefered the Genz Benz for a couple of reasons. Along with great tone its stout enough to rock a stadium. It has two independent channels and it works great for a guitar / vocal setup. It has 1/4 and balanced inputs for each channel. Its onboard effects arent bad either even though i hardly use them.

my setup:

Slow Brain > Crappy hands > Guild DV52 > Fishman Prefix Stereo Blender > Genz Benz Shenandoah 100 Acoustic Amp

For $2,000.00 you can get one of those Bose Tower systems for acoustic performances, zero feedback......

 The one I tried must've been defective then. Had the guy that was supposed to know something about them trying to set it up for me with just acoustic guitar & he couldn't get it to stop squealing.

The L1 is a great idea, but a very poor reality...$2k for a 4-channel PA (with only 2 channel having EQ), no reverb, and no bottom to the sound...here's a much better value, the Carvin AG100:
