Weird Date Stamp

Well, I pulled the trigger on a D-50 from Elderly, paid upfront and will take what they offer on trade for the two guitars I sent. One question, though. The serial number (SN500726) apparently dates it to 1991, but the underside of the top is stamped MAR 6 1981. Could that be the date that the top wood arrived at the plant, or is there a better explanation?
