Personally, I'm not a fan of the double cut-away, but I figured you Stafire IV, V gurus would get a kick out of this finish. Did they make many in walnut finish?

Hello Guilderagain,

During that particular period Walnut was a standard color next to Sunburst, Cherry, Blonde and Natural Mahogany.
You don't see too many Walnut ones, mainly because at that point in time the Starfire model was not that popular anymore, compared to the '60s.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Yeah, I've got one. '74 SF-VI:

The funny thing is, I've seen this finish on both maple and mahogany bodied SFs. Really, it's a pretty dark finish and doesn't show a lot of grain through it. There's almost no color difference b/w the maple neck and mahogany body on my guitar. It would have been much, much prettier with just a simple natural finish which might yellow over time, but will still show all the grain through and will have that cool maple next to mahogany look with the neck and body. It is a very pretty color, though. With mahogany under it, it's almost purpleish under certain lighting.

Although I'm partial to blonde guitars, I think that's a gorgeous guitar, kakerlak. :D

Hey, thanks a lot!

I like blonde guitars, too. Really, I just like natural wood, and I especially like the look of the yellowed natural Starfires that have a maple body and mahogany neck. I think the contrasting wood colors look killer that way. Mine would be the reverse if it was natural, but it seems a shame the flamed maple neck is hardly visible under the dark walnut finish. It is pretty, though. It's a pretty color and a classy-looking guitar. Really, when I discovered, through Hans' book, a decade ago that Guild made a SF-VI, I wanted one in the worst way. I'd have taken whatever showed up!

I actually bought this thing by posting a want ad on gbase or vg-classifieds in those pre-ebay days. A guy responded and sent me some murky looking snapshots in the mail. I didn't realize it was mahogany (figured it was the walnut finish over maple, as a friend had a maple body SF-IV in the same color) until it showed up at my door. Can't complain though; it was cleaner than I expected and it's a keeper.

I do too. My CE-100DP has that nice natural contrast to it. The contrast is also what I like about yours--the ebony against that dark mahogany grain--very nice.
