Would you buy a vintage exc+ condition mid-70s Starfire with a plain boring top or a modern mid-90s starfire with a beautiful flame top?

The vintage guitar is over twice the price.

Can you afford both? Hey maybe that was mine! I had one in the mid seventies.

They say that the timbers and finish age which give older guitars that distinct sound. Dan Erlewine inferd that it's the finish that contributes more to the sound. If it were me, I'd go for the newer flame top ...

If you can afford it, I would always go vintage (especially if it's a Guild  )
There's just something about old guilds that the reissues (that i have played) don't capture...

You're asking us?

The collectors would say vintage. The players would say A/B them and pick one.

In the collectible book world the rule seems to be to buy the best you can afford and be prepared to trade up which argues for vintage.

Personally, I'd ask why I was buying it. If I only could have one bass it would probably be the Starfire but now that I know it is worth more than some of the beater cars I have driven, it is the bass that only seems to get played at home these days. If you think that way that would be an argument against vintage.
